NHL Thread Because There Isn't An NHL Thread

In the salary cap era if you win back-to-back Cups or 3 in 5 years, you're pretty much considered a dynasty. The Pens, Kings, Hawks all come to mind, and now Lightning.
Yeah true. It’s so hard to keep players because what if a Rookie or some unknown lights it up and then you don’t have the space to give him a raise so he ends up going to the Stars or whoever wants to them pay them and you have that hole to fill. It’s good for the competitiveness of the league but rare to see championship teams stick around anymore.

Side note: Johnson, Kucherov, Palat, Hedman, Stamkos, Killorn, and Vassy have been playing there together since 2012 or earlier. Thats almost a decade of building chemistry between your core group
With the expansion draft looming, it will be interesting to see which players the Lightning are going to protect. Players like Johnson, Killorn or Palat could be the odd man out.

As well, two-thirds of their highly effective 3rd line is coming-up for free-agency. The likes of Coleman and Goodrow will be looking for hefty raises after their strong post-season, and Tampa Bay is already in cap trouble. Needless to say, that team could have somewhat of a different look next season, even if the core is still under contract through at least the next.

I have never been more excited to see what happens with Expansion draft, NHL Draft and trades. Have a feeling a lot of big names are going to be on the move soon. Nashville traded Arvidsson just so Seattle wouldn't take him, Poile indicated that Francis said that would have been their pick if he was available. Nashville may protect 5 defenseman to be honest. With the emergence of Carrier, they don't want to lose him. It would be nice if we can trade Ellis this offseason.

Yea I think I saw Johnson's last game as a Bolt last night. I am also pretty sure we will have to make some tough choices like you said across all lines

They're also like 4 million over the cap with the 19 players they have already signed for next year. They're going to have to make a lot of space just to line-up 20, let alone have 3 additional spares and give raises.

Agreed, and I think it starts with marquee players like Eichel and Tarasenko who are looking at leaving their respective teams.

I wonder who'll bite with Eichel? I'm not sure what to think about it. The ask is likely massive. I doubt we'll see player for player so it's going to be a package. What team can afford losing so much futures and have space to fit him in? Is it worth it?

The asking price is indeed high because he is an elite player and he's still just only 24 with 5 years remaining on his contract. Sabres want apparently a combination of players and assets. Now what that may entail is anyone's guess. That said, these are the teams apparently interested and in a position to put an actual offer on the table, Wild, Kings, Ducks, Blue Jackets, Rangers, Flyers and VGK according to SN.

Elite, yes. But time in Buffalo suggests he can't carry a team alone. So who can pay and surround him properly, keeping in mind that if you're trading a futures package, you're also significantly slowing any rebuild? The best fit is a team that is already on the cusp, I think. Wild, Rangers and VGK seem top on that list. Maybe Jackets too. Not sure about Kings and Ducks and I don't think Philly is there, but I may be wrong.

I really hope Eichel doesn’t go to the VGK. I have no idea what the Pens are going to do or who they are going to protect. Maybe they should put Malkin on LTIR and load up. I don’t think “that guy from Vegas” will be coming back this season, but who the fuck knows.

I’m just over here waiting for jerseys to go on sale…..

My take for the Habs off-season:

Unless they trade a D before the expansion, I think Montreal goes the 8 player route to protect the top 4 defense along with KK, Toffoli, Anderson and Gallagher plus Price. Suzuki, Caufield and Romanov are exempt.

That leaves Byron, Drouin, Evans, Lekhonen (assuming a qualifying offer), Kulak and Allen as signed eligible players for the Kraken.

Danault, Armia and Perry are unsigned but I think will be targets to keep after the draft.

Tatar, Staal, Merrill, Gustafsson should be gone.

And I want them to be aggressive to target a top-4 puck moving D so Weber's time can be managed a lot more and they need some offense on left wing.

EDIT: I also wonder what happens with Drouin. Does he try a comeback? Would it be best elsewhere? Hope he overcomes things. Makes you think twice about criticizing your own so savagely though.

Pens have barely any cap space, so I don't expect them to do much in free-agency. As for who they will protect, I expect them to protect the following players:

Forwards (7)

Crosby
Malkin
Guentzel
Rust
Kapanen
McCann
Carter

Defense (3)

Letang
Dumoilin
Matheson or Petterson

Goalie (1)

Jarry

Yes news broke out yesterday...

Did the Crapitals resign Ovi yet? With his contract up this year, I suspect that’s gonna eat up a big chunk of the headroom they had.

I’m curious about making Jarry available. Either to trade or for the ED and Hextall/Burke bringing in their guy.
