VMD Mach III Vol. 4...

Chris Whitley - Din Of Ecstasy

View attachment 226541

One of my rules to live by - "Always go to the show." Another rule, it actually could be considered a sub-rule to the previous rule - "Always go see the opener."

Point in case - In the 4th row for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers in Charlotte on 10-15-91. Out trots this skinny, stringy haired guy in painted on jeans and a homebrew wifebeater stretched way beyond its means toting a beat to hell dobro. In the next 45 minutes between the crazy vocal range and brilliant guitar work, this guy became one of my favorite artists.

I went with a couple friends, one of whom was totally on my wavelength and recognized what a great moment we were privileged to be a part of. The other couldn't be any farther away from us in opinion. And as it turns out, most of the crowd felt the same way. They wanted nothing to do with what was likely the alien sound of desolate, electric country blues when they were primed for American Girl and Refugee.

Screw them - my buddy and I were right.

Chris struggled finding common ground with his art and the music business. He fought his share of personal demons and was taken out at 45 by lung cancer. In my universe of admired musicians, one of the most crushing losses.

Here's a true, honest documentary about the incredible Chris Whitley. Well worth your time.

The clue explained - Chris brilliantly covers 'Some Candy Talking' by The Jesus And Mary Chain on this record.

This is a great record. Thanks!

Updated post #7 to reflect all records given away club to date.

Hard to believe but we're halfway thru year 3 of this fiasco. Given away 132 records so far.

It's never too late to play so like the first post and get in on this lunacy if you haven't already.

As this is an international proposition, I promise to never enact any tariffs unlike some other dumbass narcissist.

I am eternally grateful for my Joy Dividion record for March!
I have always heard them
in the peripheral and their contributions but do not own a record by them.
Until now ☺️
The debut album I have always heard was one of their definitive works.
Can’t wait to crack into this…
Been sick lately 🙄 post BCG treatment.
Never had a problem before 🤷🏻‍♂️
Thank you thank you thank you!
Yer Ol’Uncle D you are a gentleman and a scholar 😎☺️👍🙏

Wow!!!

Did a double dip last month, had a record going to France and kinda fell behind.

Trying to get ahead of the chains for April...

A PSA for the winners - First off - I absolutely love folks showing their excitement about receiving a record and giving their feedback about the music. THANK YOU and keep it coming.

Since this free club has grown beyond my wildest dreams into a worldwide thing, I humbly ask all the winners refrain from posting their record until all winners have received it. One of the best things about this fiasco (in addition to getting a free record) is the total surprise factor.

Once everyone has their record, please please please show off what you got and give your take on the music. I always envisioned this as being great for the winners but also great for the bands - your collective opinions can do a world of good for a group.

DM incoming...
