March 2025 Challenge Thread - Live Music (Really) Is Better!

Day 10: Simon & Garfunkel November 2023, Cox Arena – A wholly unexpected reunion tour that was fantastic. Play something by a band that has disbanded, bonus points if they did a reunion tour.

Not exactly a break-up, more of a hiatus.
They are coming to my area this year but I'll be out of town.

a man wearing a sombrero sits in a classroom with his feet up and says i 'll allow it .'ll allow it .

Hahahahaha lol

Day 2: Chicago, November 1986 at Universal Amphitheater. This was during the very smooth Peter Cetera era Chicago, really went at my high school girlfriends behest. Play something from an artist whose sound has changed over time or that you'd take a date to.

The Police "Synchronicity" (1983 A&M Canada)
Ok, I'll get one spin in tonight. One of the early dates on went on with my girlfriend of 29 years was a show with Sarah MacLaughlin and Sting. She took me, actually. Anyway, Sting was good to go on a date. And also, his sound has changed over time. I also have to say that he was super generous with playing his Police material - at least half the show was Police classics.

Day 11: Steely Dan May 2022, North Island Amphitheater – Play something by an artist who had a release that disappointed you, or that was disappointing in concert.

So there's a little twist on disappointment regarding this one. Didn't have any issue with the performance. It was the length of the show. After the first song, Chris Goss tells us to "settle in, It's gonna be a long ride" and then proceeds to play a 70 minute set. I guess "long ride' is a relative term. Ginger Baker on the drums this tour.

My recording is actually much better than I remember it being at the time. Enjoy a very entertaining 'John Brown'.

Day 8: P!nk / Brandi Carlile October 2023, Snapdragon Stadium – P!nk (like Brandi) really connects with her audience and puts on quite a theatrical show, flying around the arena at the end of the show. Play something over the top.

St. Vincent in 2018 on the tour for this album was where one of my friends learned that strobe lights at a show would give her a seizure. All under control now, but quite a night and quite a show.

Also smooth jazz duo Tuck & Patti opened the show which made for a interesting pairing, St. Vincent is the niece of Tuck.

I saw her on that tour. Really interesting show with her performing completely solo.

Day 3: The Samples, early 1990s at The Barn UC Riverside – Booked them to play the bar I worked at, my now-wife and I had so much fun that we followed them to Vegas the next day. They were big for a bit, and flamed out into varying resurrected iterations. Play an album from a band that has faded into obscurity.

Fine Young Cannibals "Fine Young Cannibals" (1985 London Records)
I really like these guys. This project was a great follow-up to The English Beat and Ronald Gift's voice is so unique. But after their hugely successful second record, life and things just got away from them and the third album never came.

Day 4: Prairie Home Companion November 1997, Fitzgerald Theater – Went to two Prairie Home Companion tapings when I lived in Minneapolis. This one featured the Nashville Bluegrass Band which featured Peter Rowan (who was in Old & In The Way with Jerry Garcia), and can be listened to here: March 22, 1997 broadcast with Kate MacKenzie, Peter Rowan, and the Nashville Bluegrass Band | A Prairie Home Companion. Play some Bluegrass / folk or something that features spoken word.

Gil Scott-Heron "Small Talk At 125th Street and Lennox" (1970 Flying Dutchman; 1990's reissue)

Day 5: Social Distortion February 2001, 4th and B – This was the first time I saw Social Distortion after the death of founding member Dennis Dannell from a brain aneurysm at the way too young age of 38. Play something from a band with shifting lineups or that continued on after a founding members death.

Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio "Close But No Cigar" (2018 Colemine Records)
Three albums so far, with a different drummer in the band on each one.

Day 6: Rolling Stones February 2003, Staples Center – I’ve seen the Stones 2x, both for free. The first time was at the LA Coliseum when I worked security and got to stand right by the stage, and the second was this benefit for the NRDC, and was the first free show they played since Altamont. Groups like the NRDC are more important than ever, spin something by an artist that promotes or has played for charitable reasons.

Queen "The Game" (1980 Elektra)
Famously played Live Aid 1985.

Day 11: Steely Dan May 2022, North Island Amphitheater – Play something by an artist who had a release that disappointed you, or that was disappointing in concert.

Speaking of yesterdays prompt re: reunion tours, the shine was off Diamond Dave on this particular night. The fact that it was a party on the lawn made it all better though.

Van Halen ~ 1984

Day 7: Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers October 2019, The Magnolia – Bruce was touring for Absolute Zero, which featured Justin Vernon. Bruce was super grumpy with the folks that were calling out for Grateful Dead tunes, said he wasn’t going to play any and also stated that he thought that nobody in the audience even knew who Bon Iver was. Play something by someone who made an unexpected collaboration.

RUN D.M.C. "Raising Hell" (1986 Profile Records; 2019 club reissue)
Here's one that was completely unthinkable at the time, a rap group and a classic rock band.

Day 8: P!nk / Brandi Carlile October 2023, Snapdragon Stadium – P!nk (like Brandi) really connects with her audience and puts on quite a theatrical show, flying around the arena at the end of the show. Play something over the top.

The Darkness "Permission to land... again" (2003 Atlantic; 2023 box set)
Over-the-top throwback guitar rock.

Day 11: Steely Dan May 2022, North Island Amphitheater – This was not a good concert, definitely felt like Donald Fagen was phoning it in. Glad to say I saw them (even if it was post-Walter Becker) is about the best I can say about this show. Play something by an artist who had a release that disappointed you, or that was disappointing in concert.

Crappy album, crappy performance at this show.

Day 9: The Cure May 2023, North Island Amphitheater – They kept it real on the last tour, keeping prices down for both tickets and merch, and putting on a spectacular set. Play something by a band that has kept the fans in mind.

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings "100 Days 100 Nights" (2007 Daptone)
I miss Sharon so much, such a generous performer. I've talked about this before but one of my favorite shows was the one she gave in a small venue in Montreal in 2005. At the end of the show, they just walked into the crowd to shake hands and meet the fans. My girlfriend ended up with a big lipstick smack on her cheek and me with a signed 45.

Day 12: The Strokes October 2019, Ohana Festival – This was probably the only time I felt like the crowd was out of control at a show. The rush of people to the stage when the Strokes hit the stage was like a wave, honestly a pretty scary feeling. Play something by an artist with rabid fans.

Given the circumstances, i couldn't help but be reminded at the time of the tragedy at The Who show at Riverfront Stadium in '79, and then of the Pearl Jam show in Roskilde in 2000 where 9 people were killed when the crowd rushed the stage early in their set.

This 2003 album had a number of references to that tragedy. The song Love Boat Captain includes the line:

It's an art to live with pain
Mix the light into grey
Lost nine friends we'll never know
Two years ago today

The main reference/remembrance is the acapella track ARC is just Eddies voice, looped 9 times.

This track was only performed 9 times during Pearl Jam shows (Eddie has done it on solo tours too), all on the 2003 tour, and doesn't show up on any of the bootlegs. The first time it was performed was at the 6/5/2003 show I was at, and was totally unexpected and emotional.

The poster from that show hangs above my desk. It totally reminds me of my oldest and captures their personality then (and now) perfectly.

Cold Specks – I Predict A Graceful Expulsion
1000015087.jpg

On a technical level, the set I saw her and her band okay was fine. Good, even. But it felt like a soulless reproduction of the album—there was no real connection to the audience, which was a real letdown for me. Maybe an off night? Who knows?! I still love her first teo albums though. This one especially.

Day 9: The Cure May 2023, North Island Amphitheater – They kept it real on the last tour, keeping prices down for both tickets and merch, and putting on a spectacular set. Play something by a band that has kept the fans in mind.

Elvis Costello - This Years Model

Elvis had audience members up on stage to spin the wheel of what song to play, and they stayed on stage at the bar while it played.
