The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

Also, my wife hates them. She says she hears the sadness in Karen's voice and it's too much to deal with. Again, didn't know Karen's story until I was older. There are songs where I get that (Superstar is a big emotional wallop.)

Really one of the maligned brilliant pop acts. The later albums are weird but still full of talent. They strike me as Abba was before Gold made people reappraise them - not cool enough for the cool kids. Whatever, they're great through A Song for You. This is definitely the highlight of their discography though.

Nuggets from the review in the book. The album was assembled quickly after the title song became a big hit. The songs were songs they had been performing live in the bar circuit. We’ve Only Just Begun was a jingle from a Bank TV ad… 😳

My mom loved the Carpenters. I really only knew the Singles collection growing up. I listened to that beat up copy quite a bit.

This came out while I was in college and I began to dig them a little more:

I should hunt down a copy of that.

Did anyone else keep their $10 Walmart box?:

I also didn't know she was a drummer until a few years ago. I'm gonna pay attention to the drums during these listens today.

My mom loved the Carpenters too. I actually parlayed that knowledge into convincing her to pick up that If I Were A Carpenter comp which has some fantastic covers, my favorites being Sonic Youth’s cover of “Superstar” and Crackers “Rainy Days & Mondays”.

Sonic Youth was kind of obsessed with Karen, the track “Tunic (Song For Karen)” is an absolute heartbreaker.

I know a feel a bit dumb around here sometimes with 60s and 70's acts, at least give me enough credit that I know of the exitance of The Carpenters 😁
Hey I hope I never make anyone here feel dumb. We all have our blind spots. I don’t spend much time with The Carpenters now and likely am only as familiar with them as I am is due to my Mom and Kim Gordon (who are surprisingly the same age) love of the group.

There is no reason for anyone to feel dumb because of blind spots. There is way too much music out there to know everything. It’s one of the more fun aspects of this whole project.
I like the blind spots. I have found a few albums through this thread that were new to me. Plus I love spreading the love for stuff that others are not familiar with but seem interested in.

But if tomorrow’s selection is. Frampton Comes Alive, I am going to be unimpressed.

I think I prefer the days where the album is a blind spot. That's the point of the whole thing. I can listen to the albums I know any time I want. I've listened to "Parklife" and "Whatever People Say I Am" in my life more time than I care to admit.

Lol, that box set! I traded it in for a handful of other albums right away. I do have an old copy of this album though. I always think of the movie 1408 when I hear We've only just begun.
