Movies

Really there is a whole subset of songs by middle-aged 70s rock stars who awkwardly leaned in to synth and drum machines with their 1980s solo albums that I am kinda fond of. It was the type of shit that was played in department stores and 90s adult contemporary radio throughout much of my formative years. I didn’t much care for it at the time but I enjoy it a lot more now.

I have a morbid curiosity to see if this is somehow worse than Madame Web.

Watched this last night and gave it 1 star. Went now to check my Madame Web rating: 1.5 stars. For a second I doubted my Borderlands rating thinking nah, that can't be right, but after mulling it over I'm sticking to 1 star.

Borderlands feels like a bad amalgam of Fifth Element and Tank Girl without any of the grandiosity or swagger.
Bad script and bad direction lead to bad characterizations.
The set design and costume folks put in good work, but Roth wastes their efforts.

Madame Web was utter nonsense, but I find myself more offended by how just plain wrong Borderlands all feels. With MW I was cracking up at the terrible ridiculousness of it all, but Borderlands was a joyless experience.

I'm not going to lie, as bad as Madame Web was, I did actually get quite a bit of perverse enjoyment out of it as one of the most disorienting and ill-conceived blockbusters ever made. It's so silly and disconnected from what it's audience is there to see that I kind of love it. Definite future cult classic (along with Joker: Folie à Deux).

Man, they weren't kidding about the CGI lol So much of it looks like it's 70% done which is nuts considering the movie was delayed. And i'm guessing none of the actors did any stunts because it looks like it was nothing but CGI characters during action scenes and the multiverse characters. CGI Nic Cage finally got to play Superman. Still, it was a solid movie.

Also, having marinated on it a couple of days, i had to move Shazam! 2 down a couple of spots.

As someone that loves the Borderlands games I just can't bring myself to watch the movie...and suspected it was going to suck even before they announced Eli Roth was going to direct it.

I'll just wait for the next game.

The younger one got to pick the movie last night. This is her favorite book.

Couple of thoughts watching movies sick in bed the last couple days:

Ed Wood is Tim Burton’s best movie.

Parasite has no right to be as entertaining as it is. Its razor focus only makes me appreciate the kitchen-sink zaniness of Mickey 17 all the more. Love that Bong can swing in such wild directions.

I've got tickets to see Mickey 17 this afternoon!

I watched Bottle Rocket for the first time yesterday. I thought it was a fun film, not my favourite but it had charm. I've read that this is one of Anderson's weakest so looking forward to watching some of the others I haven't yet seen.
I'm sentimental to Bottle Rocket since it was partially shot here in Dallas, combined with the Wilson brothers being from here. I saw it when I was going to UT-Austin which is where the brothers met Wes Anderson. I think it has a lot of heart and a lot of charm. You can see the potential in Luke and Owen. It also has one of the best needle drops that completely fit a scene which was Alone Again Or by Love when Anthony goes to find Inez.

Anderson is a master of soundtracking a scene. There are so many musical choices in his movies that work perfectly within the scene. Just typing this I can think of dozens of examples.
