As far as I'm concerned, Jeff Lemire can do no wrong. Especially when it comes to his creator owned stuff (I haven't read all of his Marvel or Valiant output) - although his runs on Animal Man (in conjunction with Scott Snyder's Swamp Thing) and Green Arrow (with Andrea Sorrentino's amazing art) were both pretty spectacular too.
Remender is also great. Black Science, Deadly Class, Low, Tokyo Ghost are all really good. His Uncanny XForce is one of the best X books of the 21st century and he even has one of the few Cap America stories that I like
Fables is a great first series to help get people into comics, since they already know all of the main characters.
Children's story characters are real and have been chased out of their homeworlds into present day magic less NYC. So Big Bad Wolf, Snow White, Prince Charming, Cinderella, etc... Its very fun and its Little Boy Blue arc is, to this day, one of my favorites in all of comics
I agree with pretty much all of what everyone else has said but wanna contribute as I love talking comics and don't get to do it often. IMO the best thing Remender ever wrote (and there is some stiff competition) is Fear Agent. heavy sci-fi but it dips it's toes in a lot of different genres.
Alan Moore has some classic graphic novels, one of the first that pulled me in was From Hell which is much better than the movie adaptation. It's all about Jack The Ripper.
Daniel Clowes is another great one. His work work combines the surreal with the mundane and can be hilarious and sad. Like a Velvet Glove Cast In Iron might be one of the strangest books I've ever read.
One last one and then I'll go. Simon Hanselmann's Megg, Mogg and Owl series is one of the best ongoing series. It is absolutely hilarious but also has come closer to making me cry than anything.
@TenderLovingKiller® I concur on the Brubaker/Philips series - Femme Fatale is probably the best but I also really enjoyed Criminal and The Fade Out. Are there others?
Kill or Be Killer and Sleeper are also Brubaker/Phillips collabs. Not as amazing as the stuff you listed, but still worthwhile. They're a solid pairing! (So much so they basically got an unprecedented carte blanche contract from Image a few years ago)
@Indymisanthrope LOL! yup that is a pretty accurate representation of the series. a drepressed drug addicted couple (who happen to be a Witch and a Cat), and their uptight roommate Owl. Also features one of the craziest motherfuckers in comicbook history Werewolf Jones.
It isn't something you would really want to have around the house if you have small children. While it's definitely much more extreme than my life has been it is very relatable in a lot of ways to what life was like for me in my early 20s.
@Turbo and @avecigrec check out My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies if you haven't already. Its the most recents Brubaker/Phillips collaboration that I've read. it's a quick but great book!
@Indymisanthrope yes 100 Bullets had a very satisfying ending imo. They stop focusing on who is getting the briefcases and start on the people handing them out. Alot of secret society with a reservoir dogs feel to it type stuff. Its been years since I've read it and should probably give it a reread sometime in the never future when I have time.
