They do meet the criteria. They basically can't have been entered into the category more than 3 times, and they can't have a Grammy on an album or something like that. It's not really about new artists so much as levels of success
It’s dumb. “New Artist” doesn’t mean new artist but they won’t change the name of the category. Japanese Breakfast is also nominated there and she has three albums. But yeah the new one is successful enough to warrant recognition - which is dumb. It’s like ‘oh now we’ll take you seriously’
@Bennnnn bingo "It’s like ‘oh now we’ll take you seriously’". it's why everyone was saying "who is Bonny Bear?" back in 2012 after Bonny Bear was nominated for the same thing. The ""mainstream"" is only now discovering them.
Grammys have always been directly related to popular music. It's weird that year in and year out there's the same backlash when someone's favorite indie artist doesn't get nominated. This ain't the Bedroom Laptop Recording Grammys. Perhaps there should be a Sundance equivalent out there for undiscovered/up&coming artists to win awards.
Otherwise it is and will always be a popularity contest.
Looking at some of these, you know the committee just pulls down a familiar name. "Didn't Drake put out a new album this year? Ah, nice. Let's add that one in."
