Having a really hard time figuring out where to slot PJ Harvey’s album in my year end list. I think I respect the album more than I actually enjoy listening to it. But it is sounding better now that the weather outside better suits its overall vibe.
The Jon Batiste documentary on Netflix is a nice reminder that we often have no idea what folks are dealing with behind the scenes in life. Sure, there is a lot of music in the film, but, as corny as it may sound, it’s really a snapshot of the real life struggles and triumphs beyond the music.
My preferred version of ‘Ride Into The Sun’ is the one from the Australian “What Goes On” box from back in the day, but since that one isn’t available on streaming platforms, I stuck with the one on the “Lou Reed” album. And I added the three demos at the end as “bonus tracks”.
Honestly, I think the solo debut is way better than most critics and fans have led me to believe over the years. That said, I think some of the VU demos and live cuts are stronger than what wound up on the “Lou Reed” release.
Been listening to quite a bit of solo Lou Reed recently, and I decided to create a playlist that serves as an alternate take on his much maligned debut solo record.
The show moved to the ACL Live at the Moody Theater venue back in 2011. Much larger than the old studio they taped in on the UT campus for all those years. I’ve only been to one taping (Rilo Kiley), and we sat in bleachers in that studio. The new one is a regular concert venue.
I saw them a few years later on the Technique tour, and they sounded good. It sounds like maybe a little too much drink/drug before this Substance show. It got one listen from me, but I’ll never bust that one out again.
Real talk here…I love New Order, but this live set on the expanded Substance is a rough listen. They were never the most reliable live act, particularly back in the day, but is this really the best offering they could find to round out this collection?
It hits pretty much every sonic era of OMD in one album. They own up to basically making a Goldfrapp track on ‘Slow Train’, but my guess is Alison is probably more flattered than anything. Lots of Kraftwerk bits here and there too. Really enjoyable listen.
There was a lot of buzz around Depeche Mode’s “Memento Mori” earlier this year. I thought it was good, but kind of dull. Not many of the songs stuck with me. However, I’m enjoying OMD’s “Bauhaus Staircase” a lot. I haven’t heard much about it press wise tho..
Austin has changed a lot since you were last here. Admittedly, most of the changes have not been for the better, but I think the same can be said of most cities. Overall, I still enjoy living here. I was at UT from 1992-1996, so we overlapped a bit.
I like the latter half of the record quite a bit. Eric Burton sounds a bit like both Sly Stone and Curtis Mayfield on ‘Sauvignon’, which is pretty damn cool. I think the songs upfront that I’m iffy on will grow on me over time.
I don’t feel like everything on the new Black Pumas album works, but I do at least give them points for trying new things, and for not repeating the exact sound of the first record.
That would be my expectation. They’ve been doing some other sit down group interviews. Seems like the members of the band are getting along better, but I’m not sure the ice has thawed enough for them to perform together. Hopefully they prove me wrong and get to that point.
