As a person with a degree in Spanish American literature raised in the conservative Mormon culture, I've actually heard that one a few times before, usually from people who don't speak a second language and are proud of it.
After breezing through the first two George Smiley books, I'm taking a break from sad British spies for a book about a sad Korean writer. (In English, the title is We Do Not Part.)
Mountain Meadows was one of those things they somehow completely jumped over when singing the praise of "our pioneer forbears" in Sunday School growing up... Only learned about it as an adult when I started reading the kind of books the leaders labeled as "anti-Mormon."

Gattaca was a movie high school me saw in the the theater then told everyone to go see, only to have a few friends decide I like to recommend boring movies.
I was gonna say it's an example of people learning some of the wrong lessons from Avatar... but I'm not sure what the right lessons from Avatar would be...
