I think socio-culturally we have to leave this clue to our American friends.
Closest I came to wrestling was in the 90 when I saw a double bill of Soul Asylum and Lemonheads in a small club and in the bigger arena next door their was some wrestle Mania event. It was interesting to see the two groups of fans curiously look at each other because in the german backwoods in the 90s the venn diagramm of indie rock and wrestling fans had zero overlap. All I remember is that giant Styrofoam fingers were popular with the wrestling cro.d
