Needles & Grooves AotM /// Vol. 28 - October 2021 /// Blonde Redhead - Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons

Hint/Clue #1: two members were dating when the album was made

Hint/Clue #2: 5th album

Sort of hint: nothing "problematic" about the band (that I have found)

Sort of hint: album is, from what I have seen, generally considered "well regarded" as opposed to "classic"

Hint/Clue #3: band started and was making music in the 90's, but this album is from the 00's

Hint/Clue #4: the album's creation involved someone from a previous N&G AoTM

So!
I have a lot to live up to.
It took a long time to nail down my AotM for a number of reasons... rejected albums will be part of some of my clues.

But let's be honest here... I'll probably get four clues in and someone will nail it.

First clue on Wednesday 9/1.

LET'S GET WEIRD!

REJECTED ALBUM #1: Rickie Lee Jones, Pirates

Why I would have chosen it: There is a reason that this album has endured and endeared for the last 40 years. Musically, it is far more adventurous than her previous effort, and lyrically it is far more naked. There's something special that just catches you from the very first notes of “We Belong Together” and doesn't let up for the remainder of the album: the piano motive has all of the sway of a waltz and lulls you into a sense of security before the band kicks in and you realize it's not a waltz at all. You think to yourself, “wow, Rickie, I wasn't expecting that.” And over the next 40 minutes, Rickie answers “neither was I.”

Why I didn't chose it: It's very available, but only in used form. This album is expected to be part of a 40th anniversary set coupled with her first album, but as of the moment has no set release date, let alone a plan to be reissued as a standalone. I didn't want anyone to gamble with second-hand dealers.

YOUR CLUE: Much of this album was written in the aftermath of her very well-known breakup with Tom Waits.
In the case of my album-of-the-month, two band members were in fact (at the time) a couple when the album was made.
