Neil Young

Just went to see the one night only, one theater only, one time showing of Coastal in my town and...the projector couldn't load the file and the help desk wouldn't call the theater back so it was cancelled. Argh!

That sucks. I will say there are multiple showings and nights if you go to the website. The art house here in Durham was showing it tonight and Saturday.

Review

The captured performances were great, the 'documentary' part not so much. The hype in the trailer about it being his first time playing in front of people in four years made me think or hope it would focus more on a few things: How Neil (and Darryl) spent time in Covid, his impetus for getting back on the road, and then the logistics for the venues he chose and songs he chose for the tour.

Instead you get a lot of time of Neil talking w/ his bus driver about mundane things between songs. Getting to see the inside of the bus was cool, and the backstage/show prep shots were interesting. But two shots of Neil leaving the bathroom on the bus was two too many.

It also focused a lot on the Ford theater and the San Diego Shell performances (which I didn't mind, since I was at the San Diego Show) but it would have been good to show a song from each venue on the tour. No Oregon or Washington songs from what I could tell.

Thoughts on the soundtrack tracklist as well. Spoilering it since it ties into the movie.

Kind of odd that the soundtrack features songs that weren't in the movie. Song X for example is hinted at, but not in the movie. Same with I Am A Child and Expecting to Fly if I remember correctly. Not that big of a deal since it still represents the tour. What is odder (and the reason for the spoiler tag) is that there is a lovely acoustic / instrumental only version of Don't Think Twice, it's Alright to close out the film that would be a great way to close out the album
