Greetings everyone! I will be your Dungeon Master for The February Challenge. I wanna first off Thank @LeeVing for putting together the December challenge. I used his challenge thread as a template. I hope I can live up to his example.

The "rules"
  • This isn't a contest or competition. You can't win and won't be eliminated.
  • Interpret each topic in your own way
  • Try to play something that hasn't been played for that day.
  • Catch up if you miss some days.
  • Don't be shy about telling stories about your selection, and yet don't feel you have to elaborate on anything you post
  • Have fun!

I'm gonna try not to fall off the wagon this go 'round.

Day 1 - Black History Month
Spin a record from you one of your favorite Black artists or groups

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced

So many influential black artists out there but I can't think of one who made a bigger impact in a shorter window of time. Essentially, there is electric guitar BJ (before Jimi) and electric guitar AJ (after Jimi) and they are two very different beasts. Exhibit A -

Day 1 - Black History

Orchestre Poly-Rythmo - Kou Nawo/Houe Towe Houn

I'm in with @D Jilla and am going to try to play only black artists. Starting with unquestionably my favourite. Also going to try to combine this artfully with playing through my collection and fresh grabs where possible. So this is something I bought just before Xmas but haven't played yet. I already have the single but this copy came up cheaply and it's v rare to find covers for the 45s so I snapped it up. I can never quite believe how productive Poly-Rythmo were - I have about 110 singles and 50 albums and while some are better than others I've yet to be disappointed by a single one. This is an early single as it still refers to Dahomey (which became Benin in 1975)

Day 1: Black History Month

Josh White - Josh At Midnight

From Wiki:

"He was the first black singer to give a White House command performance (1941), to perform in previously segregated hotels (1942), to get a million-selling record ("One Meatball", 1944), and the first to make a solo concert tour of America (1945).[26] He was also the first folk and blues artist to perform in a nightclub, the first to tour internationally, and (along with Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie) the first to be honored with a US postage stamp.[1][27]

White and Libby Holman became the first mixed-race male and female artists to perform together, record together and tour together in previously segregated venues across the United States. They continued performing off and on for the next six years, while making an album and a film together.[4][5]"

He was later blacklisted during the Red Scare largely due to being an anti-segregationist and advocate for international human rights.
