Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

I wasn't able to listen the entire time but it sounds like it's not crazy out of line for a lot of classics

I have no basis of how many subscribers they have in each track, but I'm sure they've all gone down significantly in the last 2-5 months.

If 2,000 is about average for classics, then it should hit swaps easily unless they start with the "almost gone!" bullshit when they have tons of copies.

The only things I'd want would be winner by overcoats or those days are over by wilsn but I can't participate in PIF because I don't have anything to offer and I wouldn't feel good about taking something from the PIF thread without offering something first.
Post over in the PIF thread - ask what everyone else thinks. I am a-okay with adding you in. Will leave it up to the others to decide.

I imagine that they have a lot of subscribers and renewals that they picked up in 2023 with bonus albums decided to let their subs lapse in 2024. No incentive to rejoin/renew, especially with such a massive price increase.

The "Crate subscription" seems to be the most confusing to me.

$120 for the year for 10% off and free shipping? So if a store drop, or ROTM, is $50 (Max Roach is $49 for reference), you're saving $5 bucks + say $7 shipping for a total savings of $12 bucks a drop. You'd need to buy at least 10 records just to break even.

I just can't understand who this is targeted at. A 6 month membership is $279. It would include the discount + free shipping + 6 records. Crate is $120 + the cost of the records. In this case, you'd get 12 months of crate + 3 records for about $255. Why would you ever do this?

The email mentioned Max Roach to be limited to 2,000 units. I asked Paul about this and if things were going to be re-pressed again at later dates and he basically said no. I don't think he's the person that could provide the best answer to this question, but he said that old titles being re-pressed was a priority of "the old guard" and that the current team doesn't have that as a priority moving forward.

2,000 seems pretty low for what they're calling a "flagship" title for their catalog. Maybe it's all they can afford, or maybe they're trying to stoke the fomo again and have things sell out to draw interest.

They have said it so many times and they ended pressing lots of "exclusives" and even Anthology box So if there is a demand, they will repress But first, they must be sure they will sell these 2000 copies. IMO they are pressiing 2000 copies because they can't afford to press more and/or do not want to take the risk and them sitting on the shelves.

crate is only useful if the choices in swaps are so bad ( because the sought after items have sold out while they were pre-orders) that you only want to buy stuff directly but not swap for it. but in these cases it is probably better to go for a subscription, always swap for credit and use that to buy the exclusives when they drop.

I could be wrong but the way I read the email swapping for credit isn't going to be an option anymore. They just pick what you will get if nothing is picked by you.
without swap for credit vmp members would be forced to pick up whatever is left at the time of swaps after members buying directly and no-members had their pick. That max roach record is labelled as Jazz, Blues, Funk and Soul PICK VOL № C093, and as a member exclusive for 48h.
What incentive would there be to stay or become a member if you only get the rotms and exclusives that will not sell out.
But at least they are offering all members to cancel the rest of their subscription and efund the rest of their membership period. I would do tah.

Plus, for all the people with vmpbux left that new system may give you more ways to spnd your credit, Since te real money is one anyway the risk that they are folding does not affect you

Pauly said it will remain in place and said he will fight to keep it in place. I believe the company’s intent is to do away with swapping for credit. As to when that will happen, who knows. Pauly has actively told people swapping for credit would be a good option for how those customers view the change. However, he has also told people that he thinks crate is the best option for a large portion of current membership.

I personally believe that opening up multiple avenues of swap was always an issue that lead to inventory management problems. These may never have been untenable for the company; but the large sink of money into the plant, and I still have a hard time believing that it was always a separate entity, with no return brought all of their issues to a head.

Pauly said you'd still be able to swap for credits on Discord. I think they expect some subsribers to let it go every month without swaping so VMP can start unloading those Torres records on them.

It does sound like it’s up for internal debate though. Which would be a bad blow to the already shaky value prop. I totally get it in terms of inventory management, but man that’d be terrible for customers. I’d be furious if I paid 50 to pick a record I didn’t want (and weight has increasingly marginal resale value)
