The Colorado Avalanche announced star forward Nathan MacKinnon won't return to Monday's contest against the Philadelphia Flyers due to an upper-body injury.

What caused MacKinnon's ailment is unclear, but he appeared to be in discomfort after taking a shot in the first period. He also took a couple of hits from Scott Laughton along the Flyers' bench.

MacKinnon put up one assist and saw just under five minutes of ice time in the opening frame.

The Avalanche are banged up two months into the 2022-23 campaign. They're currently without forwards Gabriel Landeskog, Valeri Nichushkin, Artturi Lehkonen, Evan Rodrigues, Darren Helm, Shane Bowers, and Jean-Luc Foudy. The team's blue line is also battered, missing the likes of Josh Manson, Bowen Byram, and Kurtis MacDermid.

Here's how Colorado lined up prior to MacKinnon's exit against the Flyers:

Heading into Monday's contest, MacKinnon led the Avalanche with 25 assists and 33 points in 22 games.
