Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

So how did most of you learn about the details of audio gear? Way back when, there were stores where you could look and listen to equipment, but that world seems gone except possibly in some larger cities. Given the wide array of options available today, what would you recommend to someone starting out new to help them learn more about audio, to include cables, turntables, receivers, amps, speakers, etc., while not knowing the "inside baseball" language you've accumulated over time?
I still have subscriptions to paper audio magazines. Egads!
