I mean it’s just a number of how well it sold here compared to other albums. It would be insane to adjust the charts in the US because an album did better in Venezuela and this would be the same for the U.K. I’d guess it did better than a few of the nine above it here if it were a global sales chart.

My point is the albums was properly regarded in the UK where it was not regarded as highly (at the time of its release) within the US. Pet Sounds spent 6 months in the top ten there in the US it cracked the top ten and then bowed out. A higher percentage of Brits were buying and listening to Pet Sounds than Americans.

They had a big uk chart hit with Ebenezer Goode maybe a year or two after this but this wasn’t my scene and I was pre teen so they’re not really in my conscious beyond that. Yeah I remember Ed being into them.

While I agree that Abba is a singles-band first and foremost, they actually have a couple of pretty solid albums under their belt. This and the follow-up, ”The Album”, in particular. My favorite is the dark and more serious divorce themed ”The Visitors”. Not a weak track on that one.

I actually have a copy of the Album in my stupid large vinyl backlog. This was an enjoyable album, but its highlights are the singles.

I’m torn about discussing the 33 1/3 book because it was maddening read. The author chose Gold and used it as an excuse to talk about all of their albums and spent way too much time defending the band. It was an abuse of the series’ concept and it also ended up coming off like the author was embarrassed by ABBA (which really is a concept I can’t get down with, like what you like - if you like Kid Rock chances are we aren’t gonna be friends, but that’s okay too.)

I kinda get but also see where you’re coming from. The rockist mentality that can dominate music fandom tends to dismiss pure pop music dripping with hooks. I definitely remember a time when this was considered a bit naff and was more of a guilty pleasure. Which is all complete bollocks because good music is just good music.
