Incoming! The New Equipment Thread

15 years ago I think my rig was Pro-Ject Debut III with an Ortofon Red through a cheapo phono and an NAD C316BEE into PSB Image B5s. I used to live like 3 blocks from Audio Video Therapy so I was kinda spoiled.

There's a store called Bay Bloor Radio in downtown Toronto and it's like THE hifi store for the downtown core. When I was a kid I used to hear the radio ads all the time and I remember going there with my dad and it was just the coolest place to me. I couldn't wait till I could actually afford something ANYTHING in there when I got older. The first thing I did when I moved out of my house was purchase their "Mozart System" which was the base model Yamaha 2 channel amp, a 5 CD Yamaha changer and a pair of Mission 702e speakers. It was basically the least expensive full system they sold. I had that exact setup for about a decade. But I remember the feeling of going in there that day and knowing I was finally going to walk out with something. It was the best.

My wife just laughs these days at my illness, I mean addiction, er, HOBBY! That’s it!

I have the main 2-ch system in my informal office (read: living room), a small 2-ch in my actual home office, the basement home theater, another small 2-ch setup in my equipment/work room, another old 2-ch in the garage, and a soundbar for the family room tv. And my daughter has the 2-ch system in her room that I got her for her bday. And I’m getting my son a system for his bday. Outside of bathrooms the only room that doesn’t have any type of system in it is my wife and I’s bedroom. Go figure.
This is true whole home audio. Get lost Sonos! And hell yeah to the systems for your kids. No one is going to develop a real appreciation for the artistry of music listening to compressed shite through earpods and Bluetooth speakers. It ends up background noise that way.

My wife is picky about her audio. Her folks taught English in Japan in the '60s, so she spent her entire youth listening to the component Yamaha stereo they brought back. If her music doesn't measure up, she gets...cranky.

Nice! I don't think we switched over to vinyl until maybe ten years ago. 15 though? We would have just taken up residence in the GTA, so it was the Klipsch RF-62 home theatre set, the NAD T747, and a Pioneer Elite upscaling DVD player for video and CD duties.

I'm jumping in on this 15 years ago game!

Sony 5 disc CD changer (still have it, was a prized possession)
Sony stereo receiver (sold to a friend that still has it)
Pioneer bookshelf speakers

I actually purchased that system back in highschool, probably around 2002-3 and it stayed with me all the way until probably 2017. I honestly kept that system longer than most things I've kept in my life. Coincidentally, about 15 years!

15 years ago, I was rocking a Trio (Kenwood rebranded) two thirds sized amp, along with the matching speakers. Both of them were from my dad's system in the late 80's. I was playing CD's through a Pioneer DVD player, with no vinyl. Been a huge jump since then!

15 years ago I was using the Sony hifi and tannoy my dad got me for my 21st. It was still the basis of my system when I first started on the last forum.

If I ever have a bigger space and a second system I’d love to get it reconditioned and set up as that.
