Yeah, I don't think there's really a way to stop resellers without printing items in such a quantity that record stores will be carrying a ton of deadstock. The Taylor Swift reselling at $30-$40 (retailing for $16-20) was highly distributed - I went to two stores over an hour after they opened and each one still had 20+ Swifts left at that time (past releases didn't make it past the open line), and that is the most obvious "if you want it now, buy it now" name for collectors. You do get things like Wicked which were crazy underprinted and poorly distributed but even then, it's a $70 version of a $40 soundtrack (like right now at Target you can buy a green and pink Wicked OST for $40) that has glitter, numbering, and one additional track. It's entirely reasonable the label thought that something like 4k worldwide would've been sufficient for a specialty product. Or do you print 10k, and then have local stores stuck potentially with stacks of $70 soundtracks they may need to clearance for $40 or less down the line?

This is going to sound cold and is no reassurance to people who do show up early, wait, and miss out due to flippers and bad allocation, but I think RSD at the present is something where if you're not willing or able to wait for an extended period of time you need to be prepared to just not get some items at non-gouged price.

I lucked out this year. I was able to get everything I wanted thanks to getting my want list in early enough, my local record store ordering everything from my want list for me (half my wants he only ordered 1 copy of based off my want list) and everything came in. I lined up early and scored.

Most years I find half the records I want didn't come in weren't ordered by my local shop. And by the time I get to anther shop it's sold out there. Then I play the game of trying to order leftovers online and even that's a crapshoot. Stuff selling out instantly or while it's in my cart. I had to buy one Black Friday RSD release on the Cogs at reseller prices to get.

My local shop in Salem is small, and he doesn't order a lot. Maybe 1/3 of available titles for RSD at most. and a lot of 1 to 3 copies for most items. For Taylor Swift, he only got 10 copies.

Maybe 50 people or so lined up in total before opening.
