Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

If you are looking for just surge protection, you can go with SurgeX (which is what I have).
That's exactly what I have on my upstairs system. So it's definitely a consideration. I've never noticed that it affected the sound quality in any negative way when I swapped my amp back directly into the wall. Likely because it only has very minor conditioning.

Or perhaps your audio environment doesn’t require conditioning. I use my SurgeX purely for equipment protection.

Yeah it's possible however I'm near an airport in the 3rd largest city in North America and my house was wired by the crazy DIY Polish shop teacher previous owner. I'd be shocked if it's not completely batshit in here. Everytime I turn anything on the lights practically go out.

Is there a prevailing thought on what the best power conditioner/surge protector under like $3000 is? Any particular brand people trust? I currently use a big burly SurgeX on the upstairs system and it's been great but it's more of a gear protector than it is a conditioner, although it does do that too.. Just looking for what I might use on the new rig.
I use the Audioquest Niagara 1200 with zero complaints.

Yeah the TOT mini and Max are in a similar price range to the Puritan 156.

I'm still not certain I really need THIS level of conditioning considering I've never heard any hiss or hum on my rigs. But I do know the power in this house fluctuates like a mofo, but the UPS would do more to fix that than any conditioner would... DECISIONS...
If your voltage fluctuates a lot, I’d recommend looking at either a power regenerator or a voltage regulator. The PS Audio mentioned earlier is an option, but more in your (already generous) budget, check out the Furman Prestige P-1800 AR.

Funny experience I recently had.

With my previous preamp, the small under the counter fridge cycling on and off could be heard through the speaker with a small pop (only when not playing music).
Annoyed me and I thought there was something going on electrically with the house or breaker.
Tried the UPS with the voltage regulator feature and it helped some but still had the issue.

New preamp and the problem has completely gone away.
It's lower gain and doesn't have the mu follower 12v tubes.

I guess that was a quirk of the old school tube amp.

Probably the difference is in the power supply design.

I’m looking at getting my daughter a turntable for her b-day and would love feedback and insights on either a U-Turn Orbit Basic with the built in phono or an Audio-Technica AT60. This would be her first table, so simplicity helps, and reliability would be a plus.

Any feedback is appreciated.

I can't speak to the U-Turn, but the AT60 will do the job but can only use the one cart (although LPGear sells a slightly improved version they build). And it'll put some extra wear on records. I'd mail you the one sitting in my closet if you want for the cost of shipping and she can have it. It's just sitting in the box and had maybe 300 hours on it, so it's an option if you want to check it out. But I think the U-Turn is probably better. I do think there's a newer AT down in that range that is not as good as the 120, but is very slightly better than the 60.

If it was me I’d pick the u turn out of the two for the ability to pick carts and the fact it has an fully adjustable tonearm in regards to tracking force.

I've been rocking my U-Turn Orbit for almost 10 years now. It's been great and can take some upgrades if that's part of the route. If I've ever had an issue U-Turn has been super responsive. The only knock would be if she's going to have to play anything 45 as moving the band back and forth takes some practice.

My first table was an orbit and I loved it except for the 45s. I hated moving the band, for such a wonderful table that was a horrible design.

That’s super generous. I will definitely let you know, but based on comments, the AT not being able to change carts, and the lower lower chance of tariffs on the U-Turn, that’s where I’m leaning. But, I have a month to decide.

I'm sure that one is a better table. The AT60 is better than a suitcase, but very basic. But it's hers if she wants it!
