Totally Tubular: The Tube Thread

Bit of an update on the PL Evo 400 Integrated.. it’s headed back to The Music Room this week for warranty repair as the V5 power tube socket continues to intermittently show a bad tube indicator on start up. It can typically be remedied by reseating the tube, but I’ve had a couple days where it’s taken more than 4-5 times to get it to work.

While I’m very disappointed that I’ll be out the system for a month or more, TMR continues to impress in the customer service department. They’re paying for shipping both ways and having it picked up at my house so I don’t have to transport it. They said they’ll likely replace the socket, but aren’t ruling out other issues. They assure me they’ll get it all sorted out so that’s really all I can ask.

It bums me out, though doesn’t surprise me, that someone likely traded the unit to them knowing it had this intermittent issue. But that’s the risk part of the buying used risk/reward proposition. Is what it is.

I’m keeping my eyes open for something to hold me over and then potentially use in a 2nd system. If anyone has an old integrated theyve been thinking about unloading let me know! LolIMG_6854.jpeg

I’m really looking forward to it. I like the gain cell and this is going to mean I’m buying a DAC as well online but it was just too good a deal to turn down and the BHK is mean to be a brilliant piece of kit!
I picked up a BHK last year during the PS Audio closeout sale. I’ve been very pleased with it. Still using the stock Psvane Art tubes haven’t been tempted to roll tubes (yet).

Enjoy!

Mine is a couple of years old and has gold lions in it (that’s what they used to give out) but the tube clock is showing them at over 8000 hours and 8000-10000 is my usual signal tube swap time.

I’m thinking of moving the jumpers and swapping in a set of NOS Philips 7DJ8/PCC88 tubes later in the year.

Oh dear, drunk Joe ordered 6 7DJ8 tubes (BHK only needs 2) and another set of backup signal tubes for the PL that I didn’t need. I think I now have enough small signal tubes for the next 12 years based on how I use them…
And the 7dj8s should last longer than the 6dj8s as they are being run at a lower voltage than they were designed to. Hope you like them! 😉
