The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

Including this album, I genuinely enjoyed Timberlake’s music until Man of the Woods which was a quarter of a good album with a quarter meh and half a bad album. What ever the most recent one was garbage and he outed himself as a garbage person then too.

I don’t know why I’m asking because I genuinely don’t care all that much, but what did he do?

Justin Timberlake - Justified

This isn’t a great album but all the singles released were all uniformly excellent. This being JT first solo album, I feel like he chose a lot of top tier producers (namely The Neptunes and Timberland) and really leaned into a Michael Jackson style vocal that really worked. This issue was the non-single slow ballads which still sounded like 90s R&B pap. None of those songs really worked and they really killed the flow of this album overall. The 5 singles released in this albums were as good as any pop music released at the turn of the millennium.

He cheated on his wife. Then when Britney made some statements about their relationship in her book, he made some inflammatory comments and then started his tour by opening with Cry Me A River while saying he apologized for nothing and THEN he had some drunk driving issues.

Newest album is full of creepy stalker songs. It’s like a companion to that Casanova album.
Beyond singles. The only truely great album Timberlake released was Future Sex Love Sounds. That was the result of taking what worked on Justified (the singles) and expanding that throughout the entire album. Some of the non-single tracks on FSLS aren’t the same top-tier pop as the singles but it doesn’t kill the flow on the whole record.

The 20/20 Experience could have been close to FSLS had he just released one album as opposed to deciding stretch the album into two separate releases. If he had taken the best parts of part one and part two and just released a single album it could have been just a tier below FSLS.

Now that his solo career has stalled I would assume he start acting more and if he gets further desperate, I am sure an N’SYNC reunion/tour eventually happen.

I saw a great NERD live show in London where they brought out Timberlake for a few songs from this, as well as their In Search Of material and other hits. Was actually v cool
Nice!

Yeah, his association with The Neptune and Timberland at the height of their powers is a big part of what elevated him beyond just another boy band retread.

I will say, I thought JC Chasez was making some somewhat cool music choices with his solo work, he seemed to be embracing a more electronic sound particularly his feature on Basement Jaxx, and a single he released on the Drumline soundtrack

But while those choices were interesting, his debut was a little late to the party and never tapped into the zeitgeist in the same way as JT at the height of his powers.

Damn I thought I was alone on Schizophrenic island!
