  • It's so hard giving yourself a limit to only buy the 15 top albums of the year... Especially this early on.
IS Destroyer gonna be a part? Torres? Squirrel Flower? ugh...

@MikeH Honestly, that reasoning is not too far off what I was planning. Might lose out on a colored variant, but not the end of the world.
I'm only getting 40 records max this year, and trying to divvy up roughly into categories (10 each):
    • Favorite albums of 2020
    • Jazz
    • Ambient
    • Other (can also apply to above categories)

@Rip_City i should stick to a plan like that haha. I order too many! Go through periods of ordering a lot and then ordering nothing. I’ve been a bit better lately about selling or trading things into my local though.

Went for the Destroyer album! :)
Hot Take incoming: I do not like Frances Quinlan or Waxahatchees voices.
Is it just me or does Soccer Mommy's 'yellow is the color of her eyes' opening instrumentation sound like it's an Arctic Monkeys/Alex Turner sound? I can't find the song it reminds me of tho
I hate when a live recording has the audience clapping along for a few seconds then give up... just like, don't clap at all...

Everyone should be given thick mittens at the beginning of concerts to discourage this behavior. If the band didn't have a drummer playing during the song, they sure as hell don't want your half-hearted attempt at keeping the beat in it.

i hate it when it seems like the audience isn't even doing anything.. no cheering, no singing the lyrics, no clapping... put a mic for the audience so it feels like there is more raw energy or intimacy

I like it when the crowd cheers, but the lone person "woooo" (Thinking about the Kishi Bashi Live Quartet) in the middle of a song is lame. I guess I'm more of a it you're not signing along, just cheer and clap before and after song. lol
Wow, don't know if I'm being really picky or just the albums out recently are 'meh'... I am excited for next Friday tho!

@hatfieldpdx I'm really enjoying the new Andy Shauf as well. Got's more to sing about, but to me it sounds since Bearer of Bad News he really hasn't changed his style much, same music with new lyrics...

@Memo that's true, though he has struck a rich vein. Did you check out Foxwarren, a side project with some of his childhood pals? Still Andy's songs, but with more of a rockin' vibe. Good stuff.

I've played some of their songs in JQBX. Definitely cool vibe!
I really hope Have We Met by Destroyer is just as good or better than Poison Season!
Ken was kind of eh to me

Important to note: I'm a huge fan of the Graphic Novel and subsequent series. Wrote my college literature report on the influence of Watchmen and why it needed to be a part of the curriculum, and it was added to the curriculum the following semester. The Watchmen movie, directed by Zack Snyder, was one of my favorites, and I still hold it to high regard (visually) despite departing from the original ending.

@supahypeag I don't watch a lot of TV... Mostly reruns of Park and Rec and Schitts Creek, lolol, but GLAD I dove in! Was convinced to watch X-Files, so that's next
My wife won a free night at a hotel in Austin next month. Super Pumped!
Gonna be able to go to my favorite shops: Waterloo, End of an Ear, and Sound Gallery.

Any of y'all that either live there or have been, any recommendations? Food/Drink/Coffee?

@jerryquijano Never heard of Breakaway! Will have to stop by
I went to Texas State so I frequented Austin a lot. So I've been to the main Austin places (The first one's that always come to mind lol), so I'm looking for new restaurants people really enjoy. Looking for a good lunch on Saturday and good Brunch on sunday. Wanting to go to Reunion19 , hopefully it's open by then.

I like the lowkey vibes of brunch on the east side at Licha's or Yellow Jacket, but honestly throw a rock and you'll hit a good brunch spot. Breakaway has some great soul and is near good coffee and vintage shopping in the same center. and if you feel like doing that venture towards North Loop, you're also not far from grabbing lunch at Titaya's or good Vietnamese.

you could also do fat sandwiches at Gourmand's way east side and then cocktails at Kitty Cohen's. from the hotel, you could do a 10 or less walk to Mohawk and Cheerups at night and catch music, or a short walk to Blanton during the day- their photo collection is stellar. I like the other recs here a lot as well! if you have a particular vibe, holler and I could better direct- but I'm sure you'll be fine exploring.

Take all your reasons and take them away
To the middle of nowhere, and on your way home
Throw from your window your record collection
They all run together and never make sense
But that's how we like it, and that's all we want
Something to cry for, and something to hunt
