The Mats Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium

I fucking LOVE this one. I've still never gone too deep with the rest of their catalogue, strangely, but this one I can play over and over again without getting sick of it. Most of my friends feel more like @TenderLovingKiller® where this one's concerned, though.

Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast

I find this to be OK. Even with its historical significance to heavy metal, it comes off as kitschy. Not a fan of Bruce Dickinson's overtly dramatic vocals. The opening track "Invaders" is one of the weakest I've heard from a classic metal record.
Some classic songs ("The Number of the Beast," "Run to the Hills," and "Children of the Damned") of course. "Hallowed be Thy Name" is a great closer. The rest of the album tracks are mostly meh.

The 80s era of heavy metal was one that I loved back in high school days, but I've long since come to realize that it is dated now.

Rating: 2.5/5 [Decent]

EDIT: misspelled song title
For me Maiden works better in a live show context rather than a record. It's the stage setup, the theatrics, Bruce running up and down the stage, the energy from the crowd. It's a show and Dickinson is a show man.
Perhaps that would change my perspective. But that means shelling out arena concert money.

This is a good Monday morning drive to work album. Keeps me awake. I love how the guitar and vocals seems to be complete noise, but somehow they all work together. A lot of times the vocals are processed like just another instrument in the mix. I also really like the unpredictability. I know I'm describing most prog, but I like how one song can go from a beautiful melody, to a catchy hook to complete chaos within the same 30 seconds. 5/5 for me.

I've tried other Mars Volta albums and this always seems to be the one that clicks with me. Frances the Mute is a pretty close 2nd but it is just way too long for it's own good.

The Mats Volta - Deloused in the Comatorium

One of my absolute favourite albums through high school and university. Don't listen much anymore (didn't help that VMP's pressing was so riddled with issues) but a very formative record.
