i imagine these will also come in stock in the US. megalopolis at least.

@Ethos99 has had Megalopolis up at Paladin for a couple of weeks. I've just been looking for other April releases to add to the cart before I place the order.
Thx for the heads up. Megalopolis and additional J Jazz haul incoming from @Ethos99 thanks to this prompt. I already have Henderson in Japan, so don’t need Habiliment despite the track swap between the two. I have both Toki and J Jazz Vol 3 on cd but like them enough to switch to vinyl and will probably sell the CDs.

So...picked this up yesterday and will be interested in what the group take is here - now, this is definite unobtanium in its original JP reissues, ive only seen it once in the wild for quite a bit, but these are now over 5000yen locally, let me tell you that is a big number here...but cover scan photo isn't awesome and for me the SQ is variable...maybe ogawa did the best he could with what he had, but not sure on the story - all project re:vinyl are cut from digital but that's not my issue here...dunno, kinda disappointed.

but I did pick up two late 70's/early 80s rando jazz records on the Discomate label and while the music is solid jazz of the era, the recordings are fantastic....

Mine haven’t shipped yet, but I’ll let you know when I’ve git them abd had a couple of listens. Yeah they are starting to get expensive, ev Ed n compared ti the 3 blind mice reissues these are 600 odd yen more , which adds up and the yen has started to go up a bit against the Aussie$ as well…. Oh well , stiff shit!

Just fyi - Cromulent has the ST Casiopea album up for preorders

I received a newsletter from HMV last night. Apparently there is a new Ryo Fukui live recording coming in June.
Also, Superfly Records will release a J-Jazz album from Shinsuke Fujieda Group

To end, I recently purchased Project Re:Vinyl and TBM reissues from DubStore.fr. They are by far the cheapest option I found to have these Japanese records. They are connecteted to RecordCity in Japan and have tons of Japanese records in store, both new and used. I ordered 5 PRV and 3TBM and saved something like 15€ on each record compared to how much I usually spend at my local. They ship to Europe but also offer International shipping options (can't comment on these prices). Worth a look.

@bornard I have a question for you about the Habiliment reissue:
Do you hear a groove echo effect in the intro to Round Midnight?
There may be a bit of this on the US Milestone "In Japan", but I hear it prominently on this Japanese reissue. Not sure if this is something to do with a computer controlled cut nesting the grooves too close together, or the handling of the lacquer or something like that, but I don't think to blame tape issues as this would have to be from a digital source...
Also I feel the mastering is a bit quiet. Do you agree?

file under J-Jazz adjacent...
it's been a bit since I've gone back through the recently very rare and I guess highly collectable Whynot Label, because let's face it, of the 16 or 17 records put out by this highly curated Kenwood/Trio owned sub label, only about half of them are even listenable (ill let you figure out which are which) - my copies are also in LA, so there's also that as a reason

so last year when I found a strong copy of Charles Sullivan's "re-entry" for about 3000yen (no obi at that price these days) it was an easy pickup as had been on my wantlist for years.

tonight I listened to it again. fuck. it might just be one the best records I own. and I have a more than a few.
this record just smokes. the playing, inspired, just fire. sound quality is epic, everything just jumps off the vinyl, this record needs volume. this is a record you will come back to over and over again. in fact I replayed it immediately.

seek this out. you will be rewarded. in your ears. not financially, cause $$.

Also, I do love what the Whynot label was doing, with their curated approach, a label should stretch, you shouldn't like every record they put out but you should maybe want to buy them all - too rare and expensive these days, especially if you're not in Japan (but even now, I rarely see them).

The George Cables record is excellent as are the two Fumio Karashima records, which have become unobtanium, because well, they are awesome as well, a few other solid sessions in the mix, the rest avant-dreck that will not reward your ears (IMO) - happy hunting.
I just picked up a pristine copy of the 1987 reissue of Sullivan/Re-Entry, and it’s phenomenal. May have the biggest delta between quality and notoriety of anything in my collection.

Anyone familiar with Tokyo (paging @bornard !!), please send recs for record stores that specialize or are strong in jazz. I’ll be w my daughter so will be doing plenty of other touristy things, but a few record stores and jazz kissaten are priorities for me (I follow Tokyo Jazz Joints and have their book so have some advice on the kissa front)

I’ll be in Japan for the first time at end of May for a full week, mostly in Tokyo and some in Kyoto. In Tokyo, I know I’m going to Universounds and Disk Union’s jazz store, and I’d like a couple more places to hit. I’ll hit Jet Set in Kyoto, at minimum to grab a sticker. (May also go to their Tokyo shop)

And if you want to DM me any advice/recs about off-the-beaten path anything (anything!), please do.

Fantastic! Shibuya has a Disk Union and HMV store near each other , where I had some luck last time, Shinjuku has a lot of shops as well. didn't make it there last time. Osaka has a few close to the Train Station . DU, Seeed and Smiles I think the other one is, I'll check when I get home. Here's a pretty detailed look at Tokyo shops, things will have changed since then but just check if stores are still there before going . I went to Jet set in KYoto a few years ago and it was pretty dissapointing , might be worth a look if you have time, but didn't have great selection and a bit overpriced I thought.

Amazing. Thanks!! I also had Hal’s and Nakano on my list, but this is a great resource (recognizing some might be out of date)
