1st Annual N&G 31 Days of Halloween (2019)

Yeah, I can’t remember even seeing 2. I haven’t really heard any recommendations for the sequels, so I never tried any.

Amazon had a 7 movie Complete Collection blu ray deal for $17 a few years back...so I got that - another one that is still sealed.

You will find that I buy movies and never get around to watch them.

I got The Evil Dead (remake) ready to go for later today, tho.

I've already watched a few this year, but yesterday we watched...
Happy Death Day which was entertaining.
and
Bram Stroker's Dracula (1992) - this is a good movie but it struck me last night how much it looks like a Gilliam film. Also, damn, Reeves is awful in it.

18 - Evil Dead (2013) 💀 💀 💀 1/2

Definitely one of the better remake/reboot/re-imaginings out there. Was different enough to keep a fan engaged, but still had some canon.
The post-credit scene was a nice addition.

It did at least get me to buy the unrated version after I watched the R-rated cut...seems the unrated version was released last year.

Watched Persona and Castle Freak yesterday. Persona was obviously the better film, but I feel it could have benefitted from inclusion of a castle freak.

Castle Freak is one that has grown on me over the years.

It was recently part of Joe Bob Briggs's The Last Drive-in on Shudder - he has some great insights in the movie. And had Barbara Crampton as a guest.

3. Drag Me to Hell (2009) 💀 💀💀💀1/2
One of the better modern horror movies for sure. This has everything you’d want in a horror film, including an interesting plot that’s not a rehashing of another classic. Sam Raimi should be required to make a new horror film every few years.

I had a similar experience on this one. My brother bought me the Blu-ray for my bday or Xmas and I think it sat unopened for like a year or two before I got around to watching. I love the Evil Dead and Bruce Campbell and didn’t think a remake was gonna live up to that. I was so happy to be wrong. I had no one idea there was an unrated version so now I have to see that

05 Hocus Pocus (1993)
💀💀💀
This was more like background viewing last night but I’m still counting it. I think I saw this in the theater. It was fine, I had fun, but I certainly didn’t think it would turn into the cult classic it’s become. Watching it as a grownup, I could do without the virgin jokes especially since the movie is couched as family friendly and that is way too adult for my youngsters but that’s really my only gripe with it..
The witches are great and I love all their scenes.

06 Would You Rather (2012)
💀💀💀
Watched this for the first time tonight. Interesting concept and I loved seeing Jeffrey Combs (of Re-Animator) in it. Maybe it was just the mood I was in but the ending didn’t have the weight I think the filmmakers intended it to have. I liked Brittany Snow in it, though. I think she should do more horror.

Late to the party but...

The Shining - 4K remastered in theaters 💀💀💀💀1/2
- I love this movie so much, it was a real treat to see it on a huge screen. Some shots and sequences played more effectively than they ever have before. Also the truly scary and jarring score turned up so loud also made this hit me in a way it hadn’t really before. It’s one of my favorite horror films ever, and I had such fun seeing it again that I’m now finally reading the book (which I know is pretty different).

Coco 💀💀💀💀
- not quite a Halloween movie, but sort of adjacent? I hadn’t seen this since the theater, but I walked away with the same impression: it’s fantastic. It doesn’t get nearly enough love out of the Pixar films, but watching it again made me realize that yeah it’s one of my favorites. The story just works for me: you’ve got skeleton people and a reliance on the importance of music...i mean, yeah of course I’m into it. There are a couple of shortcuts the story takes, but they are fairly minor and don’t impact my enjoyment much. I just really get lost in all the incredible designs so much so much that I forget how emotional the ending can be. Ultimately, this is a great film that needs more love and although we’re not in the right time frame yet for day of the dead, this is something that should be in rotation every fall.

19 - The Descent (2005) 💀💀💀💀

Another one I go back to regularly - this one seemed to get lumped in with the torture porn of the time for some reason, but it's nothing like that. This is directed by Neil Marshall - he also directed a couple of the more epic episodes of Game Of Thrones.

The sequel is watchable and continues the story a bit, but isn't necessary viewing.

A couple I have watched recently: Friday the 13th (original) and Poltergeist.

I have also been watching American Horror Story 1984 which is on TV over here atm and I am not sure why it's taken me this long to watch any of the AHS seasons. So I am now watching from season 1, starting last night, and I am enjoying it very muchly.

Went to the well* and pulled 3+ movies for today. (One is a 3 movie collection...so its really 5 movies total.)

*What I call my DVD collection that I rarely watch from anymore...my wife also wants me to sell them off. It would be a bit of a hassle. She only wants the cabinets they are currently in.

21 - Swamp Thing (1982) 💀💀💀

This is the Wes Craven movie I grew up with...before Nightmare On Elm Street came along.

I watched the infamous (among DVD collectors, anyway) recalled DVD that used a print of the international version instead of the US theatrical. It has a few boobs that aren't in the US - including a swamp bathing scene with Adrienne Barbeau.

Some info is in the link below - NSFW
