A Simple Twist Of Fate - The Bob Dylan Thread

Uh, okay. The sessions might refer to the Shadow Kingdom recordings, maybe?
Details are scarce about when the Dylan recordings might come out — not to mention the new hardware that will be required to play them.

They are thinking next level. Forget One Steps! You need to buy a whole new turntable for these bad boys!

This Might Sound heretic but I don't really have any interest in re-recorded Dylan classics however audiophile the recording are but I'm probably not the target audience

I mean, it's not the most desirable approach. I'm betting the thought process is that current recording practices won't suffice for the new technology. If it does indeed surpass all available formats, then it would surpass current recording techniques abilities as well.

But then why not record new music employing the new techniques. I think I want re-recorded classics as much as I wanted those star wars movies with new special effects

I don’t necessarily disagree. My guess is that Dylan doesn’t want to double down on this and in order to really entice people, you’d need this to be exclusive to the new format.

I don’t know that it’s necessarily the case. I might be reading this wrong but this seems to be almost a more durable version of vinyl? In that it’s cut and played with a stylus but it’s lacquered aluminium? Almost like saying, vinyl sounds the best, but it degrades, so here’s a way of it not degrading? I am getting serious snake oil vibes off the whole descriptions too but I’m willing to be proven wrong, as always lol.

Did either of you see/hear Shadow Kingdom? Most likely those are the sessions referred to here. They are excellent new versions of older material. I have no interest in another music format but if we get a legit release of those sessions I'll be very pleased.

Anyone have thoughts on the Bootleg series vinyl vs CD? Looking at a couple and not sure if it’s worth it to splurge on the vinyl vs the CD. Any real differences in sound quality? Couldn’t find much on the sourcing.

My bootleg series vinyl sounds great, but I do assume some digital sourcing. I also have the CDs of many. I prefer the vinyl of what I have, but I'd only splurge on the periods you most enjoy and will listen to more than once or so.

I don’t have the CDs to compare to, but I have quite a few of the vinyl pressings and think they sound great. There are quite a few (CD and vinyl) in the Target sale. Maybe that’s why you’re asking? They did have Another Self Portrait on CD which is a really great one but it might be sold out now.

Yep wound up getting Vol. 1-3 on vinyl and the big Live 1966 36-CD box set. Thought I’d probably listen to Vol 1-3 on vinyl the most, and realized that there are deluxe versions of the some of the series that include more on CD, so going to hunt a down the Cutting Edge and a couple others. Thanks!

didn't even know there was a 36 CD box set haha. that's nuts. i picked up vol 1-3 from target finally this time around. Classic Records pressed a few of the vinyl boxes as well but I think most are pretty $$ now.

I'm pretty sure there is a huge CD box set of all the bootleg series (or most of them) but also probably OOP.

There are probably a couple I'll pick up on vinyl at some point down the road, but as you mentioned, they're often "best ofs" from the full release on CD. I've also got the 36-CD '66 set (which is definitely overkill, but a cool package) and recently picked up the 5-CD Springtime in New York, which is an awesome package, too. The 2-LP version of that is cool but doesn't include the acoustic "Too Late", probably my favourite selection from the set.

Good to know — though this is still probably the kind of set I'd prefer on CD/digital anyway, for ease of jumping around (and generally trying to cut down on vinyl/save space).

Also interesting, it appears the acoustic "Too Late" in the set is a different take than the one originally released on the excellent Uncut compilation last summer.
