A Simple Twist Of Fate - The Bob Dylan Thread

Always been more a fan of recorded studio material.
Think my favourite Dylan moment live or studio is probably still the Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues from Boot 4 (or ‘The Real RAH’). Has been since I was about 13. Otherwise I’d agree.

Although saying that I’d probably put Boot 4 up there with his best studio stuff. Second half is absolutely wild.

Yeah bootleg 4 is definitely an exception to that rule. It is on fire. They're clearly letting a lot of frustration out in that show!

Two nights of Budakan material not getting your juices quite flowing?
so i take it nobody bought the japanese vinyl box set of Budokan? i've been streaming it and really enjoying it actually...the temptation is there for me...

I watched an unboxing and thought ‘go on then’ then couldn’t find it for under £350 so binned the idea off and picked up the double.

It’s a handsome set for sure though.
yea i'm tempted.....but just picked up a buncha other stuff so will leave it for streaming for now and see if I'm still listening to it a bunch in a few months and it's still in stock. i see it for around $300 shipped to the US from CDJapan.

Been listening to a lot of Dylan this week, and I have an embarrassing confession to make…I was completely unaware that Sinead O’Connor had recorded a cover of ‘I Believe In You’ in the 90s. I knew that was the song she was supposed to perform at the 30th anniversary show, but I was unaware that a studio version was ever recorded and released. And I didn’t know that an expanded version of that 30th anniversary show had been released, so I didn’t know her rehearsal performance was available on that set. Both of those recordings are amazing. I always liked that song, but her vocals and sparse arrangement take it to a higher place for me. Really beautiful stuff.

And while I’m coming clean on Dylan covers that I should have known about but didn’t…Margo Price tweeted earlier this week that she and her band have been playing Tina Turner’s cover of ‘Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You’ as the hit the stage. I knew Tina had done a country album as her solo debut after escaping Ike, and that it wasn’t available on CD. I think I had looked for it on streaming services a few years ago, and didn’t see it. Well, it’s now on Spotify, so I was able to check that one out this week. I really enjoy the whole album, but that particular Dylan cover is a cool interpretation.

Beyond that, I’ve been doing the deepest dive I’ve ever done into the Christian Trilogy, and the deluxe version of the “Trouble No More” set. I’m finally starting to come around on that material after all these years, particularly ‘Shot Of Love’. I love that about Dylan’s catalog. I’m always stumbling across older material that I wasn’t interested in or ready for initially that I suddenly become obsessed with.

I'm not aware of any studio version of 'Tell Me Momma', or even word that it was ever attempted in the studio. That seems crazy to me. I'm thankful for the various live performances of the tune from '66, and it has always been a highlight for me from those shows. Surprising to me that it was a song that apparently just came and went. Maybe it was simply a casualty of the motorcycle accident and career reset following that tour?

I finally picked up Trouble No More and I really dig it. I love the band from this era, especially Fred's guitar. I think this whole era merits a fresh outlook. There's extremely strong material/performances on Shot of Love, Saved and Slow Train Coming.
I have also been revisiting Street Legal and think it is also an amazing album.
