Album of The Year - Endgame

21. Dustin O'Halloran - Piano Solos
Oh fuck I completely forgot about this one. I absolutely adore Dustin O’Halloran and I think this is his one album that is yet on vinyl.

Just other worldly

The second half of this one is just magnificent. You get that magical feeling like you’re hearing “Clair de Lune” or “Gymnopedie 1” for the first time

Yeah 1981 was a transition year but it wasn’t that bad and tbh @wmeugene you went so hard after it that I actually checked stuff out and developed a strange fondness for it.

1999 on the other hand...

...I was there, I was 16 (the perfect age for being obsessed with music and scenes) and it was dire, drippy inconsequential indie and nu-metal ruled...
My biggest criticism of ‘81 is that just about every other year has at least 3-4 albums if not more that I’d put ahead of the best of that year. With that being said, it’s definitely a transitional year between the sound of the late 70s and what would soon dominate the mid 80s.

‘99 definitely isn’t the strongest year (it’s surrounded by a number of strong years), but it has a few classics.

1. Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
2. Talking Heads - Naked (dramatically under-rated in their catalog)
3. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
4. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
5. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions...
6. Morrissey - Viva Hate
7. The Sugarcubes - Life's Too Good
8. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Tender Prey
9. Dead Can Dance - Serpent's Egg
10. Mike and the Mechanics - Living Years

  2. Pixies – Surfer Rosa
  3. Cowboy Junkies – The Trinity Session
  4. The Travelling Wilburys – The Travelling Wilburys, Vol. 1
  5. Sonic Youth – Daydream Nation
  6. Public Enemy – It Takes a Nation of Millions…
  7. Lucinda Williams – Lucinda Williams
  8. U2 – Rattle and Hum (The movie’s terrible though)
  9. Rob Wasserman - Duets
  10. Steve Earle – Copperhead Road
  11. Galaxie 500 – Today
  12. Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds – Tender Prey
  13. NWA – Straight out of Compton

spreddy updated for 2004

88 was a pretty good year - both from the avant garde (sonic youth) to hip-hop (public enemy, nwa) to mainstream (tracey chapman)

five antipodean options off the top of my head in alpha order:
nick cave and the bad seeds - tender prey
the church - starfish
crowded house - temple of low men
do-re-mi - happiest place on earth
go-betweens - 16 lovers lane

the first mentioned and the latter will probably be in top five; amazing albums the pair of em

‘99 definitely isn’t the strongest year (it’s surrounded by a number of strong years), but it has a few classics.

See id put, for example: Dare by the Human League, Bella Dona by Stevie Nicks and, particularly, Nightclubbing by Grace Jones in that category. I couldn’t even get 10 for 99 and wasn’t even hugely keen on my number 1...

1. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
2. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
3. Morrissey - Viva Hate
4. The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God
5. Traveling Willburys - Volume 1
6. Tracy Chapman
7. Van Morrison with the Chieftans - Irish Heartbeat
8. R.E.M. - Green
9. Prince - Lovesexy
10. U2 - Rattle & Hum
