first 3 volumes are really nice. It’s what The Caretaker does best IMO. Classic ballroom-esque music filtered through his special production to make it sound aged and broken. The next 3 volumes are pretty much a noise fest of just randomness and nothingness. I was little disappointed how quickly it shifted in sound from 3 to 4. I honestly couldn’t tell 4, 5, or 6 apart if you played them for me blind. They’re... fine. That sort of void noise is not really my cup of tea. Maybe someone else with more experience with harsh noise would be able to describe it better.

and I see. yea, eventually when I'll listen to it, I want to be in a good mindset. im not the biggest noise fan either, but I like some stuff like metal machine music. so I think I would like this probably, but it might be a one-time listen for me to see how it is, bc again, this is 6 hours long, it's not really something to be played on repeat, even by ambient/noise album standards.

Tbh I’ve never listened to the whole thing at once. I’d just chunk it up by each volume if you want. The last 3 volumes are very daunting. If you want to give your undivided attention... good luck. Having it on while you do something else is what I’d recommend.

Crazy, I had no idea about either the TikTok challenge or the NYT article about it. Thanks for posting about this.

Kirby’s work is interesting but challenging. I love An Empty Bliss but it doesn’t lend itself to repeated listenings. I’m less of a fan of the Everywhere At The End Of Time series — to me it’s an unpleasant sledgehammer. The music’s emotional intent and commentary on nostalgia and memory is more succinctly and elegantly delivered on An Empty Bliss.

Checking this one out at work. The list of albums underneath where it states: "The records below will give you an idea of the Outer Sounds we love…" is exactly along the lines of what Musique Plastique carried. They were my favorite record store (currently online only), and this might be a consideration to fill the gap until they get a new spot in Portland heading into the new year.

Thank you very much for this! Price is a tad iffy but might just do it. A few OT days at work should pay for a year.
 
Posted this in the Tunes from Asia thread earlier. It isn't quite ambient throughout, but she reminds me of Ana Roxanne in places. A couple of chamber folk songs sprinkled in. Loving it.
