April 2022 Vinyl Spin Challenge - Intertextuality and You

April 3 – Carmen Maria Machado, The Lost Performance of the High Priestess of the Temple of Horror

I fell behind yet again...
I'm going with the witch theme.
It's been a while since I last listened to this one. It's quite fun and her version of Tom Waits' "Jockey Full of Bourbon" is great.
Gonna have to look up what she's up to these days.
This is why I think these challenges are great, you get to explore and rediscover your collection.

April 8: Kanai Mieko, Rabbits
  • “Every day since then I am haunted by the ghosts of the dead rabbits and have behaved like a large, one-eyed rabbit. In short, I have clearly confirmed that I can never again return to the world of human beings. Looking back on it, I see that I had lived like a normal human being until the fourteenth of that month several years back. Up to that time, I had been like any normal schoolgirl and had kept hidden from my classmates everything about my father’s strange tastes—that he killed rabbits and cooked them. And I cannot say that I did not feel somewhat guilty about eating the cooked rabbits. If they had known that I had calmly eaten the rabbits I myself raised, my classmates would have surely nicknamed me Tiger Lily.”

I was thinking of playing this one!

April 8: Kanai Mieko, Rabbits

By simple word association I thought of White Lilly from Laurie Anderson's 1986 album Home of the Brave. It's a song about a scene from the 1980 Fassbinder movie Berlin Alexanderplatz.

Mieko's text describes someone thinking back to the moment when her life changed. It expresses the tyranny of time, the before and after of events that cannot be undone, days gone bye endlessly pulling us into the future.

Day 5: In the cemetery where Al Jolson was buried

When @Hemotep gives me such lovely, lush passages, I find they evoke certain feelings and emotions, not all I can explain. This passage requires The Chopin Project by Olafur Arnalds and Alice Sara Ott. Maybe because when I think of fear and tension, I think of strings—I have seen way too many old movies. Maybe because the low melodic piano reminds me of floating in the air. Maybe it’s the play between the piano and violin and how they mingle in soft discourse, and how that creates a sad longing.

Life isn't always better as a rabbit, as evidenced by this song, covered on this album.

Did anyone else have the Rabbit story cut off before the end? I got to the bottom of page 15 and it said 'some pages are omitted from this book preview'
I was riveted...and also creeped out.
