April 2025 Spin Challenge – Well, this is puzzling…

Day 16 - The Temple of the Dog album is released on April 16, 1991. Spin any supergroup or collaboration, a song that is a tribute to another artist, or any artist who appeared at a tribute concert.

Czarface meets Ghostface – Czarface Meets Ghostface

Czarface is already a super group, made up of 7L, Esoteric and Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck; for this album the collaborate with another Wu-Tanger: Ghostface Killah.

Day 12 - April 12 is RSD! Show us your haul or spin any RSD release from any year that you own

The Lemonheads - …In Dreamland
IMG_7109.jpeg
This is pretty much what I expect for Record Store Day at this point. This is a collection of poorly recorded demos & radio sessions of Evan Dando with an acoustic guitar covering some fantastic songs by the likes of Big Star, Lou Reed, and Neil Young. Still if you’re a fan of The Lemonheads you are probably fine with it, I know I am.

Trans-Canada Highwaymen "Explosive hits Vol. 1" (2023 Pheromone Recordings)
This one has been a go-to of late, when prompted to play a supergroup. The band is a collaboration between a who's who of Canadian 90's musicians, with Stephen Page of Barenaked Ladies, Moe Berg of The Pursuit of Happiness, Chris Murphy of Sloan and Craig Northey of Odds. There's a reason I keep coming back to this album - it's super fun! It's set-up as a tribute to K-tel compilations and the guys play great covers of Canadian radio hits of the 60's and 70's. Well, there's one original - the opener, which is a theme song of sorts for the band. 🍁

I still need to get a copy of this.

Day 14 - Spin a recently discovered artist / band

Butterglory - Are You Building A Temple In Heaven?

When Steve Albini died almost a year ago, I did a deeper dive into his “engineering” work and discovered a band that I really enjoyed called 18th Dye. Well, that album was hard to come by on wax but I did manage to finds a seller via eBay in Singapore and while that was the only album I ended up buying from that seller I did look over his other “for sale” albums which introduced me to a handful 90s indie rock acts that wouldn’t have felt out of place opening Pavement or Guided By Voices. Along with bands like Sammy and Lily, they also had this album by the band Butterglory.

Archers of Loaf - All the Nations Airports

A recent Bandcamp Friday had this band's albums on sale, and I filled a weird gap in my early-90s indie rock knowledge (I'd heard of them and heard a track or two, but had somehow never truly given them a listen, as often happens with music from before you truly got into music).

The Ducks were Neil Young and a couple members of Moby Grape teaming up to basically rock the fuck out in LA during the summer of 1977.

My Neil obsessiveness and geographic proximity has kicked in. They rocked the fuck out of Santa Cruz and the surrounding area. Not LA.

LOL! I will certainly defer to you knowledge when it comes to both SoCal and Neil. I just read something that Crazy Horse had a contract at the time that stated they were Neil's touring band thus Neil could only play shows locally and couldn't take the Ducks on tour.

Day 17 - Great live performance / recording

Sloan "Alive & Alright" (2023 Murderecords)
Maritimes represent! Sloan was formed in Nova Scotia in 1991. They started during the alternative era, but by keeping true to their almost-Beatles-esque songwriting abilities, were able to distinguish themselves with catchy power-pop hooks. This allowed them to also have a lot of staying power, still releasing excellent records with 13 studio albums to this day. This live set released in 2023 is from a superbly recorded live show that was played in Scarborough on February 4, 2000 while touring their album Between The Bridges. Housed in a beautiful tip-on sleeve, the vinyl is cut at 45rpm and sounds fantastic. Having these songs on vinyl is great since Between The Bridges hasn't yet been processed through Sloan's great reissue series. 🍁
