Best Music 🎵 of 2023!

Ive been in the worst new music funk this year. Im either not listening to anytthing or when i do i just dont fall in love with it. Hoping that changes with the second half of the year but looking ahead I'm really not too excited for anything

Favorite Albums
1. Kali Uchis - Red Moon in Venus (I dont even think i like this that much but i just keep finding myself putting it on lol)
2. Jessie Ware - That! Feels Good!
3. Paramore - This is Why
4. 100 Gecs - 10000 Gecs

Albums I liked but didnt love
Lana Del Rey - Did You Know
Caroline Polachek - Desire

Albums I still need to check out
Boygenius - the record
Feist - Multitudes
Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA - Scaring the Hoes

Most anticipated
CMAT - Crazymad, For Me (literally just announced!)
Janelle Monae - The Age of Pleasure (not into the singles but ill give her the benefit of the doubt)

Serious question, @Rip_City and @RHANDMJ , had you listened to Angel Bat Dawid before? What were your previous impressions of her? I think this is a natural progression in her music. I do think we probably lose something from what the spectacle of the show must have been. I would be very interested in seeing her live, but also in seeing this particular performance on video.

Also has anyone, @avecigrec , watched the movie? (The Cry of Jazz)
I have tried before. Same result, find her much too sanctimonious. I guess it's a matter of tone, as I can go way free. If it's her or Albert Ayler, Albert is the real thing.

But to each their own. Never would knock someone for liking any music (almost...).

There's still 60+ years of great music out there, most of it forgotten or neglected. Maybe I'm just spoiled.

I've never listened to Yves Tumor before but I saw someone mention it being pretty rock. I had really only heard of them and thought they were more R&B/Electronic/Pop. Listening to the new album now and it's pretty good. Vocals and music reminds me a little bit of Bloc Party.

Saw them a couple weeks ago. 10/10 live show.

Alt-Rock appears to be back in. New Bully and Foo Fighters are both fucking awesome. Add that to Wednesday and I'm hoping its a trend.

I have some catching up to do. Been distracted by the NBA playoffs but here's where I'm at:

Tier 1:
Caroline Polacheck- Desire, I Want to Turn into You (art pop)
Yves Tmor: Praise a Lord Who Chews (art/indie rock)
Killer Mike: Micheal (Rap)
Geese: 3D Country (rock)
Wednesday: Rat Finds God (indie rock)
Bully: Change Your Mind (alt-rock)
Danny Brown & JPEG MAFIA: Scaring the Hoes (experimental rap)

Tier 2:
Janelle Monae: The Age of Pleasure (r&b)
The Murder Capitol: Gigi's Recovery (post-punk)
Grian Chatten: Chaos for the Fly (folk)
Boygenius: The Record (indie folk / rock)
SlowThai: Ugly (rap)
Maya Ongaku: Approach to Anima (folk, world, jazz)
Paramore: This is Why (pop punk)
Clark: Sus Dog (downtempo electroic)
US Girls: Bless This Mess (art pop)

Tier 3:
Foo Fighters: Here We are (alt-rock)
Kari Faux: Real Bitches Don't Die (rap, r&b)
Overmono: Good Lies (electronic)
Shame: Food for Worms (post-punk)
James Holden: Imagine This is a High Demensional Space (downtempo techno)
Sbtrkt: The Rat Road (electronic)
Jessie Ware: That Feels Good (new disco)
Caroline Rose: The Art of Forgetting (indie rock)
Yo La Tengo: This Stupid World (indie rock)

Tier 3:
Fever Ray: Radical Romantics (electronic)
Yaeji: Like a Hammer (electronic pop)
Young Fathers: Heavy Heavy (you tell me)
*Jayda G: Guy (dance pop)
Miss Grit: Follow the Cyborg (art pop)

Need to go back to:
Water From Your Eyes: Everyone's Crushed (noise pop)
Queens of the Stone Age: Time New Roman (alt rock)
*Billy Woods: Maps (hip-hop)

* = currently in rotation

This is such a basic song but it's hitting the sweet spot right now that I think @Melt Face Molly Drop aluded to in a status

so fucking good. Beach Fossils have done it again.

First listen of this album and I worried it was going to sound very “samey” and while the vibe is quintessential Beach Fossils, they managed to make this one stand out. I’ve listened through 4 times now.

Don’t Fade Away and Feel So High are my top tracks right now.

Yup! First listen through I thought the same. From the surface it’s a very “samey” album but after a handful of listens things start to open up. I think it’s sequenced well and every song is in its place. Run to the Moon and Numb are my two favorites. If they did a whole album a little more like Numb that would be amazing. The rhythm guitar in Run to the Moon is soooooo good. Kind of shoegazey as well, almost Mazzy Star or Beach House-y.

Yeah my first two listens were on Spotify, then I picked up the Zia exclusive and felt it opened waaay up.
