Agreed. Invalid no, less useful, yes. They definitely have early access. Not sure that makes them "invalid"; it just makes the list less useful.
Good point.Stereogum has to get clicks to make money. Putting out a mid year “best of” list a month early as opposed to a month late is bound to generate more traffic.
It also helps me maybe catch anything I may have missed before I do my own mid-year list, so I'm okay with it.Stereogum has to get clicks to make money. Putting out a mid year “best of” list a month early as opposed to a month late is bound to generate more traffic.
I discovered like 5 albums I plan on listening to from this list and the comment section on that article. Definitely a good thing that they posted it. This year feels so light in releases that I've really loved so I'm eager to find anything that's gone under my radar. It also helps me maybe catch anything I may have missed before I do my own mid-year list, so I'm okay with it.

I love seeing Urban Driftwood by Yasmin Williams on this list at #31 and the Parannoul at #49. Those two albums are incredibly unique individual artistic visions that deserve recognition.
Leprous just announced a new album "Aphelion" due out on August 27th
Lol Leprous isn't really obscure. They are much more well known than say a band like Portal or Panopticon.Ah yes, another obscure metal band that no one has heard about but you. Got it
Yup my point exactlyLol Leprous isn't really obscure. They are much more well known than say a band like Portal or Panopticon.
