+6dBI think balanced are normally +3-4dB over RCA.
It's nice to have the extra bump if not offsetting something else in the chain.

Plus having an entire loom of the same manufacturer is desirable, if, of course, the sound is pleasant to you. System balance is my mantra.Hey, I’m a simple guy. If something works for you, you like the way it looks and it’s not a fraudulent drain on your wallet - buy it.
I happen to prefer using balanced cables over RCA when the option is there, so that’s a plus, too.
Yeah I mean the company/guy that made my cables retired a few years ago but there's some XLRs kicking around on Audiomart that I can grab. There's a crazy deal on some XLO ones at one of my locals but that's a really heavily counterfeited brand so I think I'll just stick to what I've got, there's no chance those ones are being faked. Far too small of a company for that.Plus having an entire loom of the same manufacturer is desirable, if, of course, the sound is pleasant to you. System balance is my mantra.
I'm not sure there's a universal standard.+6dB
It'll be the stage to the amp.I lost the bubble on what the XLR cables are connecting.
I'm sure that's going to be a variable.
Ok, then I am not sure if you pick up additional gain with the XLR connection coming out of a phono pre. It'll be the stage to the amp.
For sure, there's currently only a single XLR of the one I need so I'll have to wait till more show up. But I may just save myself some cash and just stick with blue jeans for the upstairs system since it'll just be streaming music and watching tv/movies up there once I split this off. The next question is... What do I do about the set of speakers I'm going to need to buy to replace the L100s upstairs...Ok, then I am not sure if you pick up additional gain with the XLR connection coming out of a phono pre.
I know you do with a preamp but phono could act differently. Let us know what it sounds like when you can compare.

Yeah like, the normal human behaviour move would be to buy a pair of inexpensive replacements that will do the trick for home theatre and put them in the system upstairs. The pro move would be to buy some absolutely awesome top of the line speakers that I know are better than the L100s. Pretend they're inexpensive, then "just for FUNZIES" move them to the main system after a month or so "just to see how they sound'. Then leave them in the main system and put the L100s back upstairs. "Yeah it was crazy I mean I had no idea they would actually sound BETTER."I have mine between the phono and the preamp and the preamp and the power amp. The new phono is single ended though so that connection will go back to RCA once it lands.
Oooooh! Speaker shopping! Fun!
Now he travels the world in a rather large boat, named "Merci, Mather"Yeah I mean the company/guy that made my cables retired a few years ago

Yeah I totally agree. I simply can't afford to go crazy with them since I just got the Lyngdorf. So going big big just isn't in the cards, but I think something like a Forte IV could work really well simply because they can be had at a pretty good discount for open box or lightly used very frequently. And it would provide a different sound than the L100s while not breaking the bank. I'm not sure if I'd like them more. But I know they'd be different. And that's interesting to me.This may just be me, but over the course of a few decades in this hobby, I’ve never found it to be less expensive to go with half-measures, or go backwards, with equipment. Especially if I am familiar with a certain level in a room.
This is to say, don’t buy noticeably lesser speakers for your upstairs than the L100’s. You’ll just find a way to justify replacing whatever they are and eat the cost of the cheaper ones. In your case, I wouldn’t look below the L82 level unless you went for something very different, like Maggies or something.
That makes total sense. The Klipsch could be a lot of fun. Or if you can find them a used set of Tannoy Stirling’sYeah I totally agree. The other easy option is to go with a tower Revel or Spendor for about half price. But these don't seem as fun to me... Even though they'd probably fit into the space a little bit more easily...
The Stirling's are definitely one I've been keeping an eye on, but what with the new owners gutting the company and all the engineers leaving to form Fyne, I'd much rather the Fyne Classic X, but there are SO few of them around I've never even seen one on CanuckAudiomart, so I think it'll be a tall order. That makes total sense. The Tannoys sound great, I’ve heard them, and they are timeless.

Just gotta avoid the Stirling III LZ Special Editions, those ones were the ones done by the new Tannoy engineers and they were just savaged in every review I saw.The Tannoys sound great, I’ve heard them, and they are timeless.
Just deleted pictures of the two models I listened to a week ago. Don’t remember which ones they were.Just gotta avoid the Stirling III LZ Special Editions, those ones were the ones done by the new Tannoy engineers and they were just savaged in every review I saw.
