Concert Memories

Oooh, I love this angle.

Local H, First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, USA 11-16-96

i worked at my local best buy at the time in the music/movies department and we would get comp tickets for some first avenue shows once in awhile. the bill was gravity kills, local h, and some other band called chainsuck. i'm not going to lie, i went to see gravity kills, and i remember more of that set (and the one dude's spinning keyboards) than local h. i'm pretty sure this was my first time at first avenue. i couldn't tell you what local h played, i wasn't that familiar with them, and i honestly don't remember anything about seeing them.

off to a great start!

This cannot be eclipsed.

Close the thread.

Actually, shut down the forum.

What would we do with more time?

Yesterday was the 11th anniversary of the 2nd and most recent time that I saw Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The overarching plot of the show was about someone watching over and rocking to sleep crack babies born in the hospital on Christmas Eve. Now I realize this is a real thing and God bless all who do that monumentally depressing yet important task, but Jesus Christ what a downer of a holiday show!

Today would be the third anniversary of seeing Chvrches, one of the first shows we saw when touring ramped back up during covid. Masked up and took the kids for what I think was the 3rd time seeing them. The final girl encore was excellent. Lauren Mayberry is doing a solo tour that we will have to catch.

This one's a little fairer and fresher...

Alan Sparhawk, Palace Theatre, St. Paul, MN 11-9-24

Bonus question as I can't be bothered to peruse your 22 pages of sweet shows - did you ever see Alan's side project The Black-Eyed Snakes? I absolutely love that band.

i was excited and thought it was pretty cool that alan was opening up some shows for godspeed. i hadn't heard the new record, though, and let's just say alan sparhawk with autotune wasn't for me. i appreciate him doing whatever the fuck he wants to do, though. he did have his son up there playing with him, which was awesome, and they did do some guitar based stuff including some retribution gospel choir tracks. him and his son walked right by us after the set and i don't think i ever realized how not very tall he is - while his stage presence can be understated, he's always seemed a larger presence. i have not seen the black-eyed snakes, unfortunately. despite living in minnesota and having ample opportunity, my low and low-adjacent attendance record is pretty sparse :/ my setlist.fm says i've only seen low once, but i know it's at least three times. yo la tengo had alan come out at their show here early last year and they did 'i heard you looking' and fleetwood mac's 'dreams', which i have found video of:

Chvrches is one of my all time favorite live bands! I've seen them many times in SF (including their first show here in 2013) and have travelled to Austin and NYC to see them. Lauren has become such a powerful stage presence over the years, I need to give her solo album a listen.

Lets hear about Jonsi @ the Pantages 2010. Have such good memories of that show in San Diego.

dude! this is probably one of my favorite shows, for sure. certainly one of the most emotionally moving shows i've ever seen. we had tickets up close in what was already a small venue, and everything about the music and visual presentation just felt like a full spiritual journey. tears were shed many times. i think it surpasses even any sigur ros show i've seen. i remember the stage and screen visuals just being so immersive and intimate, the animation incredibly beautiful. the dvd that came out just doesn't capture this at all. i absolutely wish i could see this show again.

Same, seriously a top ten show that the DVD doesn't capture at all. One of the loudest and most cathartic shows I've seen, especially the closer Grow Til Tall. The animation / visuals of everything getting blown away along with the intensity of the performance sticks with me. Would love to experience that again.

Twelve years ago today I was the cool cousin who got free tickets to see Ed Sheeran in a 1,200 cap room as part of a Breast Cancer fundraiser at the venue I did work with at the time. I went into the show skeptical, but he earned my respect by shushing the screaming girls into silence before he would play any of his softer songs.

I saw Ed around 7 years ago and he does put on a pretty entertaining show! I was surprised that he could play arenas (at the time) but man did he fill that place with sound.

"Saw" Thom Yorke 6 years ago today. He played a smaller (1,300 capacity) club in town, and tickets sold out immediately and were super expensive on the secondary market. My friend and I tried to get last minute tickets outside the venue to no luck. This venue has a separate bar attached to it that has in/out privileges to the show, so we just went to the bar and listened in, and watched the show every time the door opened. I still count it as a seen show given the effort, and it turned out to be a super fun evening hanging out and people watching - and trying to sneak into the venue to no luck.

Looking through Setlist.fm, I realized I just passed the 40th anniversary of the first show I saw. It was a good one. All I remember is Michael Jackson pulling the sword from the stone and fighting a dragon(?) and the deep waves of bass across the field.

13 years ago tonight... The National at The Beacon Theatre - it was also web streamed. Such a great show. We saw John Krasinski, Emily Blunt and Will Arnett there. After the show, we went down to Rockefeller Center to see the tree and they were closing down the area. It was the same night at the SNL Christmas show and they ended up skating on the rink (thus the reason they shut down the immediate area)
