Definitive Audiophile pressings

You guys! Huge emergency, I need to know the best version of Combat Rock. STAT! JP first press any good? Any recent reissues any good?

(Okay it's not really an emergency I just needed to get your attention
I have this one from 2013. Chris Bellman cut. It is a United pressing but sounds good and thick to my ears.

Not sure how you tell the difference between the CB and the Wes Garland cut from the same year.

I have never heard any Japanese pressings but would caution buying one. 80s JP mixes tended to reduce the bass. The bass is there and is very clear but lacks the power you would want in an album like this. Just my 2 cents.

I’m really fond of the last set of Clash remasters, including Combat Rock. I don’t feel the need to move past any of them. I have this press.

@Joe Mac says the 2017s are good quality I think

I have the 13 of debut, 17 of Cobat Rock and 19 anniversary of London Calling. They’re all very good and all use the mastering done by the remaining band members and Tim Young back in 2013 when they redid the catalogue.

I need to pick up Give Em Enough Rope and Sandanista at some point. Have an OG of Cut The Crap that I got as a PIF on here. Oh, and an OG of The Story of the Clash which is one my all time favourite best of albums.

I was expecting more from this MoFi In A Silent Way given the reviews and secondary market value. I've listened to this album hundreds of times and this pressing just isnt flooring me like other MoFi titles (e.g., Garcia/Grisman, Santana 1).

Edit: clean pressing though. Very little noise. It does sound great, I'll admit.

I think it’s the best I’ve ever heard the album. I’ve had a few different copies over the years. With that said, I wouldn’t pay the $200 for it that people were asking but I’m not sure I’ve ever paid $200 for a single record

I haven't been floored by any of my Mofi pressings TBH. I think the Dire Straits stuff sounds pretty good, although I don't have any OG comparisons. Cars and Pretenders, Mofi sucked pretty bad.

Someone once called their releases a processed sound (Pre DSD-gate) and I think that description has stuck for me pretty well.

That company is so hit and miss that it's difficult to put any reputation behind their releases at the price points charged.

did you try listening to them with your mono cart? ;)

there are quite a few MoFis that are really very excellent. most of the 80s pressings on the JVC vinyl in particular. ziggy stardust blows me away every time i listen to it. Many of the Dylan reissues are really fantastic (especially the later Dylan stuff, some of the earlier Dylans are matched in quality IMO by the mono box). Garcia Grisman is crazy good.

I'm not the biggest fan of Krieg Wunderlich's work. And my biggest gripe with MoFi is the curation. But when they get a release right, the results are really excellent. The Blood On The Tracks One Step is a top 5 sounding record I own.

And I am ok with this feedback but dang it is hard to drop the dime for them. I do think they are probably outside the top 4 or 5 mastering wise.

But my mono cart kicks ass! Never appreciated Mono until the G + Mono happened. True 😘

OG Dire Straits sound awesome, as do the MoFis. But comparably, not much different IMO if you have clean originals

This is the kind of discussion that forces me to remember how many variables are in play besides the particular pressing in question. Gear (which is exponential in its impact once each piece and their interactions are considered), listening environment, our ears, our preferences/biases....it's endless. Lends itself easily to comparisons between pressings on the same system, but beyond that, it's almost like we're tasked with trying to make sense out of ongoing conversations where each of us is speaking a slightly different language. Amazing that it works as well as it does! (So keep those opinions coming!)

Depends on the release. $40 for In A Silent Way seems more than fair. I agree not all their releases are worth the price though. I’d say they are more hit than miss. Agree too that KW is maybe 5th best engineer? I take KG, CB, RKS and Bernie over him.
