Definitive Audiophile pressings

Rhino is a crap shoot honestly. You never know with them. If there was one company that I wish was more transparent with source, it would be this one. Not for the mofi golden ear crazy expectations but to know when one is desirable before it goes to market.
The good thing is none sell out in preorder really (aside from Stop Making Sense) and they get really wide distribution. You can usually wait until someone has it in hand to report back on the deadwax and if you dare venture to hoffman forums, people from rhino visit there and give specs from time to time. Agreed it’s annoying they don’t advertise specs up front

I got through the second side of Charles this morning. Wasn’t a critical listen as I don’t have the ability to do that during the week, but it was definitely good all the way through, despite the low volume of the master. Nice dynamic and rich sound. No surface noise. Good stuff. I’m 2/2 on these. Possibly neither is audiophile but I feel no need to want an upgrade on either.

At some point I will check their matrices to see if I can determine who cut them. Charles has no info on cogs regarding cut, besides at Optimal.. Nelson says McMaster cut it but it appears to be a draft copy and the plates don’t match the last reissue there.

The Phases and Stages 75th that I picked up has some really confusing runouts because of how they overlay ontop of each other from the other side due to the vinyl being clear. the only thing I can really make out on my copy is Bellman's etched signature, so I think the McMaster info on Discogs is perhaps inaccurate.

Can confirm CB on my copy. I don’t recognize the mark on Charles. is either a D or a C with a backwards 7 or upside down l or something.

Interesting….didn’t know bellman cut that one. Might pick it up then instead of paying the VMP price when they do it next year

Wilson Pickett might have just sounded bad to me because of Atlantic’s recording methods. It sounded quite muddy when I listened to it but need to relisten

I think CB probably cut closer to the way I want it than RKJ will. Jones is good but tends to smooth things out more than I would like.

Yeah, like I said with Charles I don’t think the compression is the engineer’s fault - isn’t Rhino’s MO anyhow. And reading up on other cuts, seems like the source is a bit fucked which makes sense since it was one of the first things they did.

I will not be replacing my original Collins. Lol. I have perfectly fine copies of Charles (75th crystal) and Mingus (older reissue posted somewhere). I am interested in the other two Mingus, Dock of the Bay and Soul Man, as well as Zeppelin… if it materializes. I have deluxe versions of 1 and 2 - might even replace those with AP copies.
