I don't think you are expecting too much. The digital really did sound awful ion comparison to my Japanese pressing, I bought for my brother but ended up just sending it back.

No, there are definitely good pressings out there, just hard to find without the record in your hands.
I had an RCA cassette in the early 80s (probably a Columbia House buy 1 for a penny) that was pretty much all low end. When I played it in my car it was like was like Ziggy karaoke, there were no vocals at all.

I did a pass of the Kind Of Blue UHQR with headphones on because my wife has multiple zoom calls today. It is so quiet. I also sense less tape hum and a whole lot less sibilance from both the high hat and Miles' trumpet. I can't wait to turn the volume up and hear it again through my speakers. If I could get a house without wife and kids this weekend, I'd do the Pepsi challenge with it, the MOFI, and the Kevin Gray mono.

I must say the AS Out of the Cool is by far the best I’ve heard the album. Mine is dead silent which is a plus. I’ve had original Van Gelder pressings that actually sound quite good and the 45 that is pretty good too but this is better than both. I guess the 45 was from a copy tape and you can actually tell that the 45 isn’t quite as clear compared with original pressings. I’d much rather listen to this on 33 rpm too then have to flip every song on the 45. Every jazz fan should have this in their collection.

I agree 100%. I had not listened to this album b/c I generally don't like the ensemble/big-band arrangements, but this music is modern (by standards of the time) and aptly named Out of the Cool b/c it's "out." I was very pleasantly surprised. It's a killer album, and the sound is fantastic.
Yeah I feel like Gil Evans’ music can definitely change minds on what big band stuff is supposed to sound like.

i REALLY like mine. Some people love it and others seem to say it's smiley face EQ and hate it from what I receall. The stereo separation on it is really great. I found one for a really great deal on instagram, of all places, about a year ago.
I had the MOFi Ziggy for a long time. It is great. The Huff BS about smiley face is rubbish, particularly as Hoffman's formula is the opposite - hard cut at 15k, pump the mids. cut at 40h. Although the MOFI is 30 years closer to the master tape, I do prefer the more recent version, if you can find one of the AAA cuts. If not, be happy with the MOFI.

I disagree. If it's out of copyright then it would be a legit reissue, so not sure I would call it a bootleg. But usually the 'gray' market releases don't use the original artwork. So, could be a bootleg, but also could be a legit label similar to Elemental (unlikely I agree), but worth trying to find out, asking them what sources they use.

One reason the album art may be different is that the copyrights in the album art/photos are separate from the music. The music could be in public domain, while the art/photos are still protected.
