That is my take on the record. I had been listening to Ziggy for about 20yrs by the time I heard the MoFi version. It just sounded wrong to me. That said I only listened to it a couple of times and have not heard it in at least 15yrs.Oh and by the way @MikeH I think you asked about the Ziggy Mofi vs the AAA remaster the other day. I did do a comparison and what I found, not surprisingly really, is that I found the Mofi to be a lot cleaner with a larger soundstage and a lot more presence. The detail on the Mofi is next level. The 2016 sounds like I'm listening to Bowie at a concert. The Mofi sounds like he's standing in my livingroom. The veiled quality of the OG mix is gone and for better or worse it's all much more forward and present. I love the sound of the Mofi but I can absolutely see why Bowie purists or listeners who are far more familiar with the traditional mix wouldn't really like it, it's definitely different. I don't mind but I also didn't grow up listening to the album, I knew the big hits for sure, but mostly from radio play. It's probably a lot like the Bellman 45 The Band remixes. They're astonishingly clean and clear, but to me they don't sound like the The Band. The sound is totally different and for that reason I prefer the OG mixes.
The ONLY track on the Mofi Ziggy that I found really didn't work at all with this more detailed mix is "Hang On To Yourself". That's supposed to be a wall of sound kind of mix and the Mofi pulls everything apart so much that the song just doesn't sound right, far too crunchy and separated. But that's the only one that I didn't like.
Thanks! I’m in a similar boat to you. I knew the hits and everything but wasn’t an obsessive listener to the album prior to picking up the MoFi, which I got for a really good deal. And I was blown away by how much I liked the MoFi pressing considering I had seen near universal hatred of it in reviews online. But your explanation makes sense and I have a feeling quite a few of the people who got the MoFi early on felt the same way.Oh and by the way @MikeH I think you asked about the Ziggy Mofi vs the AAA remaster the other day. weird! i have this one and it sounds solid:If any of you have the Leonard Cohen "Songs of Love and Hate", Sony Legacy or MOV (same plates) do you care to comment on quality? I had the KPG Sundazed but both copies I got the pressing was just horrid and pretty much rendered it unlistenable.
it's just a collectors item now. i see them for sale/trade on facebook all the time for $800+ sealed and hardly anybody ever bites on them.Insanity. £350 for a record and it sold out within an hour. John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
I'm guessing they continued to press it, perhaps the later pressing run was bad. But it was bad, both copies.weird! i have this one and it sounds solid:

Yeah just read the reviews of the pressings, generally not great. I don't think these are made for actual listeners.it's just a collectors item now. i see them for sale/trade on facebook all the time for $800+ sealed and hardly anybody ever bites on them.
This is the crazy thing about it. Their USP (other than exclusivity) is that they use the same equipment, original tapes, yadda yadda, in order to create the definitive pressing of the album. In reality, it seems like they always have issues with quality.Yeah just read the reviews of the pressings, generally not great. I don't think these are made for actual listeners.

"Hi I'm Mike, owner of the In Groove here in Phoenix, Arizona" replays in my brain every time I see the In Groove mentioned. The consistency of his intro on those videos is pretty astounding. The guy that runs the In Groove
