Definitive Audiophile pressings

@MikeH I had the Brian Eno Abbey Road half-speeds. From what I remember they were pretty good. I got them in a sale and someone ended up messaging me on Instagram with an offer for the set for more than I bought it for at a time when I was culling the collection. If it wasn't for that I would have held on to them, I really did like them although I had nothing to compare them with.

I have the Arthur Verocai that @Poly-Rythmo mentioned and I agree that it's fantastic. Really great stuff.
Right, they are great. The Abbey Road Dusty in Memphis is a knockout. The CCR titles are excellent. Solid Air is superb. I can't say I go out of my way for them, but I personally find it arrogant presumption that some YouTuber is giving Abbey Road mastering advice.

You can like them, you can hate them. But Miles Showell knows more than most about this.

I think those Abbey Road pressings have 2 things going for them....they trade on the name Abbey Road and people get all slick whenever they see "half-speed remastered". That has become just another term like "heavyweight vinyl". They're phrases that are used to turn units and have been so often used with subpar pressings that they no longer really convey anything.

I'll second that the Eno releases, both 45 and 33 RPM are pretty sweet. The Japan REs of Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum were nice too (again both 33 and 45). I have a few more, but I'm hardly sold by the aforementioned stuff; usually wait till I read user reviews before I pull the trigger unless I think it's gonna be limited and waiting will be a bad move.

These days, there are albums I'll buy pre-order w/out reviews simply because I love the music but I still wait w/ anxiety (I mean, as much anxiety as I allow record collecting to cause in me, which is very little) till I hear what companies, people are involved or have it in my hand and spinning on my table.

There are only a few places that make me confident that they'll 99% of the time turn out great products (all things considered w/ source material).

The KG Sundazed box is pretty meh, very flat dynamics on most of them (1969 sounds pretty good though) but it’s great to have them in mono, and they probably sound better than most pressings you can get from the past 25 years. I would really like to get a 70s or 80s aaa copy of some of the VU albums but they go for over $100 a pop nowadays

The older copies are indeed crazy prices. I got the VU comp from the Sundazed scratch and dent sale and it’s actually not bad sounding but I’d rather just have the full albums.

I've got the VU "Collected" from MOV. It sounds like crap. I've also got the Tidal Hi Res Master version of their various albums streamed through my BlueSound Node that in theory should be the best they can sound. It also sounds like crap and is indistinguishable for the MOV. I'm not certain there is gunna be a version of VU that doesn't sound like relative crap.

Sadly VU albums will never sound good. They are all meant to be beat to shit, handed down from older sibling to younger sibling or found at thrift stores under 15 moldy Herb Alpert records.

Yeah I really regret not jumping on those 80s reissues a few years ago when you could find them in the $20s.

I saw on cogs that people are claiming the KPG Abraxas got repressed and no longer has the pressing issues endemic with the first pressing. I tried to get one but it turned out to be the EU 2017. Can anyone confirm if they've seen these KPGs anywhere? I feel like the people mentioning a repress have likely not looked at the deadwax and probably have the EU...

Haven’t seen it but will keep my eye out!

Does anyone know where to get a non-inflated priced copy of the 'Duke Ellington And His Orchestra ‎– Masterpieces By Ellington' AP 45rpm set, in the UK/Europe preferably? Scott Nagle has it listed for £43 plus postage which I would go with but I have heard sketchy things about the website/company.

It's one that I have been wanting to get for ages but have yet to find a copy. The album itself is incredible and while I have heard that the OG is really stunning I currently have my sights on the AP.

If you can’t find this one, I can vouch for the quality of Pure Pleasure’s release.

Not sure, but looking at Scott's site, he has the 45rpm @ £70 & the 33 at £43. It also says awaiting repress so I wouldn't bother. If I see a copy at a reasonable price I'll ping you.

You saved me there, I misread the listing and thought the 45 was £43!
