Definitive Audiophile pressings

I love all the knee-jerk "I'll pass on the digital vinyl" reactions. That's a weird devotion to some kind of extreme fetishism that has nothing to do with actually enjoying music.
Agreed. Hell, I recently picked up a Silver Label title and thought that even sounded excellent. To me, though, it is the business practice and desire to address the issue when given the opportunity but instead chose to almost make it a laughing matter(which it sort of is). Meh, will I continue to buy Mofi? Yes, I think so. But these fools need a better marketing approach.

Well I gotta say, I'm pleasantly surprised. This 76 JP does sound really nice and full. Not bright or thin at all. I think the newer remaster helped clean up the drums and cymbals, but on the whole I find it too bright. This version has muddier drums and cymbals, but otherwise I much prefer the full sound on this one, still got good stage and depth and punch, but it's got that kinda dirty full sound that I expect from Zep. Very nice, @Turbo I agree with you. This is a keeper. Can it sound better? I'm sure the Classics records beats it, but can it beat it for $48? Nnnnnnno.

Really glad you like it! Love the wider soundstage of these japanese pressings. I think this one has the "dirtiest" crunchy sound of all of the japanese Zeps I have, but it really suits it. Also, just the fact that these copies are super clean - like mine has zero pops and background - is a huge win.

Speaking of japanese presses, I actually just received a NM- LZII Japanese 1973 today... plus a japanese press of Songs In The Key Of Life (that I believe both you and @Joe Mac quite enjoyed).

You’ll love that Stevie press, all the Japanese Stevie OGs are magic!

Any recs in particular? I’d love solid pressings of Innervisions and Songs In the Key of Life
For Innervisions go with a OG US press with KENDUN in the deadwax. It was re-cut by Kent Duncan. The George Marino ones had issues skipping. They can be had for fairly cheap. I've had multiple pressings of this over the years and still find this one is hard to beat.

Is the only difference between these the “H” in the deadwax? Otherwise the same?

i think it might be more about "if it is digital anyway... why would we buy vinyl and not a digital download or CD/SACD copy"

Because the mastering required for each medium is completely different. Vinyl has a myriad of restrictions that, in part, lead to the sound profile we all love. Plus if you think like that why would you bother with anything released in the last 20 years on vinyl?

i didn't say its what i believe in... I'm talking about the people who'd buy a mofi album

Yeah I think the direct comparison, even jokingly, isn’t fair for those reasons, particularly mastering given the extra work that needs doing to fit within the constraints of the vinyl medium. Also even if they were able to be functionally identical the process of lasers and a DAC is so very different from dropping a needle into a piece of wax and running the low signal through a phono stage.
Lots of people rag on Waxtime because they are obviously digitally sourced. And you know what? There’s not a damn thing wrong with them. They sound good, are well pressed and are reasonably priced.

That they are digitally sourced is immaterial- they still sound better than any CD of the same album that I’ve heard. And you don’t have to spend nearly what I did on gear to beat the CD.

My issue now- given what we know, is the pricing on the MoFi releases. It’s still a good product, but I’m not sure I’m in anymore given the price.
