Pro-Ject, Rega, Music Hall, Clearaudio Concept, and even MoFi all have that minimalist look to them. That’s what I mean.
I don’t even know what table that is but it looks fun!
just doing a guess but if you are wanting a new turntable with a more... old school look, probably a VPI would work best since they are more retro (probably their 40th anniversary model for example)

and if you are less nervous about replacing the stylus or having to deal with some repair work going with an old turntable could be awesome

It’s the 21st century! They’re all also distinguishable on sight from each other. Plus the linn table still looks like it always has, the pro-ject classic has its own retro personality and the rega RP8/RP10 look like absolutely nothing else!

That would be a Garrard 301 (made from 1953-1965) in a Shindo plinth with a Shindo platter and arm and an Ortofon SPU cartridge. Ten grand won’t put one in danger of owning a setup like this.

it seems like most people seem to agree that stacking a target media shelf on another one wont break it... they are built very similarly to kalax's (and even include those little things to connect shelves), but they have a top shelve limit of 20 pounds which makes me nervous seeing a full shelf would be more than 20 lbs

Probably a silly question but I have some powered speakers with a built in preamp that I will soon be able to bypass since I just bought a Bellari PA550. My very silly question is, I’ll still be able to adjust the volume on my speakers once I remove the preamp from the equation right? The preamp doesn’t have anything to do with volume, is that right?

So what you have bought is a full preamp with a phono stage rather than just a phono stage. So it does actually control gain. What I would do in that situation is put the speakers up to full gain and control the volume from the preamp.

Nope, if you turn off the amp on the speakers the volume will be controlled by the Bellari.

Thanks so much and I’m sorry for asking, i just have a really hard time wrapping my head around this.

So if I had not bought this particular model that happened to have a built in gain function then I would not have been able to control the volume on my speakers?

Say I bought a VP 29, connected it between the TT and the powered speakers but moved the switch on my speakers from “phono” to “line” ....would that have worked?

For the models I've used in the past, switching them to Line eliminates the volume control from the speakers because its bypassing the powered amp part of them. Not 100% sure that's the case with all powered speakers.

Exactly that, the VP 29 is just a phono stage so it applies the RIAA curve and brings it up to line level. It doesn’t have a volume control. Which powered speaker are you running?

Im confused? What he bought is a pre-amp so he still needs the power section of the inbuilt amp to power the speaker regardless? Doesn't switching to line on most powered speakers bypass the phono stage, not the amplifier?

No wonder powered speakers with built in preamps are so popular with plebs like me! If I want to join the cool kids I’ve gotta get a preamp and an amp and then there’s the whole issue of where to put it all! Someday I’ll have the space and the funds to join in on all the equipment fun! Thanks again for the help :)

On the other hand, separates mean you'll never have to throw away speakers you like because the ten-penny amplifiers inside them have fizzled out.

In my search for new speakers, I ran into a pair of Boston Acoustics VR-M60 bookshelf speakers.

They seem to be from the early 2000s and seem to get a good amount of love online, but was wondering if anyone here has had any experience.

Maybe @HiFi Guy ?

Either way, they’re charging around $200 for them, and I’m wondering if I should pull the trigger.

Any help would be appreciated!

Looking at the full awards list I’d love to hear this Vertere Acoustics Phono-1 MkII phono stage!

Before coming across the Jolida this was on the short list to look into a bit more, at the end of the day I was trying to avoid spending this much on the second system. But, I'm with you, would love to hear how this sounds. Never say never, lol
