Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

Published in partnership with Victrola.

ya don't say?
the first reason slays me.... hey, record store guy, do you mind if I put this $300 copy of Dark Side of the Moon on my victrola? Just want to make sure it's worth the 3 bills, yo.

elevate your staycation.... okay...

VPI never did figure out how to properly market the CLIFFWOOD.
Totally. It gets poo poo'd by forum posters (not here, gang! 😂) worldwide who have zero experience with the table, who essentially claim VPI have no business in "entry level." There's also one guy on YouTube who had a bad experience who totally panned it, but didn't seem to actually get his ears on it. There are a couple of reviews on blogs that I've really never read outside of those reviews who seem to universally love it, but have no idea whether their ears are trustworthy.

All I can say is that I've A/B'd it against a few other more expensive decks now and have ultimately preferred it each time. If it didn't get that ~50% price hike recently, it would honestly be a no brainer if you can live without adjustments.

Also as an aside, I am beyond psyched to eventually hear @Mather's takeaway on a Prime 21, as at this point, that's really the only TT upgrade I'd consider, barring any major system component changes, but I'm not in a financial position to be opening up quite that large a can of worms!

OK - So I am re-posting a thing I posted over on #gear-talk (over at the Vinyl Me Please Discord), but I feel like I'll get some better feedback and recommendations here.

Help me put an upgrade on my holiday wish list! Currently rocking a U-Turn Orbit Custom with built-in Pluto preamp and Ortofon OM-10. Onkyo A-9010 integrated amplifier and KEF Q150 bookshelf pair. Looking at a $1,000-$1,500 budget for turntable/preamp. (Also, feel free to let me know if I may get better incremental gains by putting that budget elsewhere in my system)

Turntables I'm evaluating:
  1. Pro-ject Debut Pro
  2. Rega Planar 3
  3. [Insert other recommendation here]
Preamps:

Preamps, on the other hand, are the Wild West for me. I just want tone that would pair well with the turntable/cartridge and keep me within budget.

Thank you all in advance!

- Matt

Don’t forget the UTurn Theory. That and a Darlington Labs MM-6 or MP-7 and you’d be golden.

I am hoping you slipped an extra zero at the end of the budget by accident…

Also if you wait a week or so I can chime in on the performance of the Theory that HiFi just mentioned.

LOL I absolutely did. Fixed it.

As a long-time U-Turn Orbit owner, I’m very intrigued on that. When are you expecting yours to arrive?
