I was thinking dark green…Part of me would be tempted to go with wood but contrast the wooden speakers, table and surround with a lighter toned wood. Walnut and oak always contrast against each other quite well, for example.

Agree. The $15 for an electronic stylus pressure gauge is a great investment for any turntable. It may solve the problem with your current one.First guess is you are tracking light.
