Equipment Recommendations - The Home For New System and Upgrade Advice

doesn't a blank reel cost more than a hundred dollars?
I think it's slightly less than that but there's nothing logical about it.
I guess you could sell a recorded album to offset costs.
I really don't know enough about this area.

I was thinking it would be $5-$10k to even buy in.

After reading about a few machines, you can get in much less, especially if you will refurbish some things yourself.

That said, a well maintained Mac could last you many, many decades. They sound and look great, and if you keep the digital aspect separate you likely won’t need to replace it anytime soon.

Overall though, if you can comfortably afford it and want it, go for it.
I appreciate the input, all. I was concerned I wouldn't get my point across, but you all got it. I'm looking for something that will remind me of my accomplishments and sound great for decades.

Man just look at the reel to reel prices for individual albums and that should just about take care of any desire.
This. The machine is useless without music to listen to on it. And you’ll spent a fortune getting music you actually want on it.

I’ve considered getting a reel to reel a lot just of of curiosity but it would be expensive and hard to find the reels to listen to for music I like.

If I had a giant listening space that could comfortably accommodate a R2R I would consider picking up a super cheap one just for the aesthetic. I would want one that was in working order and would probably buy one or two albums that I could play just for novelty, to show off to friends but I do not have the space so I haven’t looked into it.

They look really rad though.

There's a "working" reel-to-reel for sale one hour away for a very affordable price.
Somebody tell me how stupid this sounds.
A good reel to reel is truly amazing. And a decent deck isn’t that much in some cases. But sourcing good tape, setting it up, etc. ooof.
It’s a lot. Whenever I’m even remotely considering it though, I just compare it to vinyl.

$500 tape, or 4 one step vinyls, or 10-12 brand new records, or 20+ used records.
It’s a hard sell.

If you want a good middle ground, get an excellent turntable set up, and pursue lacquer. It’s honestly great, costs the same as tape, but doesn’t require extra gear.

Say you take the pesky 45s with great fidelity and could record to tape. Tapes are $50-$60.

I think some people have started doing this.

The $500 AP tapes will probably come down over time. Would not be in any hurry to be ordering those anyway. It seems very high considering how easy they are making them.

@Andy
This is what my whonky ass room looks like. There’s all kinds of place for the music to get lost and reflect for forever and well the speaker placement is fucked, plus they ain’t exactly top of the line speakers. That being said, DIRAC has me listening to everything I own like it’s brand new. The stage isn’t as impressive as @Mather but it definitely made stuff be in the right place and the walls are gone. It’s a modest rig that sounds like it is less modest.

Also the NAD doesn’t sound digital. The song I had before it was definitely doing something to the vinyl that is gone now and that’s a good thing. It was limiting it for sure and based on a phono audition I did, it was something digital in the aux set up there (it was a shelf system not even worth mentioning, below entry level).

@hamicle and @debianlinux have run the 3050 too. Unsure if they are still running them or ran DIRAC. They both have more experience with kit than I do.

That M10 is real pretty though.
Great to hear you getting such a good sound. I must admit I’m slightly nervous about the digital element great to hear that it does sound digital. I think I need to trial one

You think 45s are pesky to listen to? Wait until you try reels hah

I don’t understand why people would buy a $60 record from Chad, then buy a $60 tape to transfer it to.

I don’t think those AP reels are going to drop in price from $500 to anywhere close to LP price. Even doing a Quick Look on eBay for reels, many are $200+ and the listings say they have no way to test them so you’re buying as is.
