Everything Video Games!

E3 Started with EA Play yesterday and boy does Jedi Fallen Order look good. This is the best/worst time of year for me as I begrudgingly look at all the games I am hype for and then see my budget laugh at the idea of getting even 1/2 of them.

@duke86fan I love ya, but KEANU FUCKING REEVES won E3.
a semi friend of mine was actually angry about cyberpunk 2077 because she thought you could customize your character... then it turned out you were just playing as some dude..

she was so excited to play this immersive RPG with a customizeable (and to her hopes, female) main character..

then the cover is just some dude and all her interest disappeared

Not surprising considering the Witcher. Wonder why they thought that. I think you can never have cinematics that are quite as good with customizable characters, which is a bummer so I don't mind that too much. However, it is definitely a missed opportunity that for a game set in 2077 they went with American white dude.

Just spent a few hours catching up on the Bethesda and Microsoft announcements (time I should have spent writing for work).

I'll probably be giving Fallout 76 a shot this week. Reason enough to finally also use the free PS Plus trial.

Overall, the Bethesda presentation hit the right apologetic tone given the past year's events, but it still kind of fell flat. Had hoped they'd really come out swinging. Ghostwire Tokyo and Deathloop are both intriguing at least.

Xbox's presentation was super impersonal, but had a lot more "huh" moments. Like, I might actually consider the Xbox PC Game Pass — especially for Metro Exodus right out the gate. Happy to see Dead Static Drive featured, and I hope there's a release on the horizon. Been following that development for a while. Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely on my list (probably on PS4, tbh), and Elden Ring is exciting in concept. Outer Worlds and Ori were noteworthy, and I really need to get my ass in gear on the earlier Borderlands games.

I'm gonna still assume based on the gameplay from last year that you can still customize your own Character... But I see your point

You can still customise your character. The male and female shown are the default placeholder characters. Much like how Mass Effect had a default male and female Shepherd which were used for trailers and the box art.

I’m sure the game will be good, but Cyberpunk seems a bit hyper masculine and aggressive to me. The nice thing about The Witcher was that Geralt wasn’t always just some tough guy, they occasionally subverted those tropes and made him a complex character. Cyberpunk just lessens like a lot of tough guy posturing.

Oops, I missed that. I guess tell your friend to hang in there unless they state that they scrapped the character creator that they already demo'd.

On the surface Geralt is beefy swordsman who traipses through the countryside slaying monsters and banging over-sexualized witches. Before playing the game you wouldn't have thought any different. I don't think it's fair to say of what we've seen of what seems like the foreward to C2077, a game in which you can choose not to be a beefy boy, that the game will be anymore hyper masculine than Silver Fox He-Man. I'm sure you'll be given the choice not to bang the over-sexualized cyber prostitutes and be given plenty of moments where you can nurture a young street urchin, if that's what you're into.

I'm sure CDPR understand this, I think this feeling you're getting is more of CDPR just trying to hype up the game. Why they would show slow character building bits, when they can show cool action bits? I feel like come release, we'll see some great writing for our character.

I hope y'all are right but I don't take anything for granted and the ads have shown no subtly. Some people will give CDPR the benefit of the doubt but I'll wait to see what people have to say after they play the game.

What concerns me is that the first two Witcher games (more so the first) were pretty bad in this respect if I remember correctly. I agree that what we've seen so far has left me a little cold. On its surface, the idea of a cyberpunk game at a hopefully W3 quality should have me really excited.

When Cyberpunk 2077 launched its first teaser, it seemed right up my alley. It inspired me to be a better sci-fi fan and actually dive into the inspiration sources. I'm almost finished reading Hardwired, which the earlier Cyberpunk 2013 RPG was largely based around, and this new trailer leans heavily into the blackmarket courier dealings Hardwired depicts.

What I like about Hardwired is how it explores both male and female leads, their autonomy, and their vulnerabilities in a world and in lines of work that require them to be hardened professionals. Identity is such a huge part of the characters' motivations/struggles, even for the side characters, and sexuality plays a part in that for many. Masculinity is not without femininity, and sexuality doesn't define anyone.

I do hope CDPR draws even more heavily on this nuance in characterization. I mean, that trailer was somewhat homoerotic, but maybe that's just me looking for something I'd like to see. Either way, the purported romance-ability within the game and customizable characters gives me hope that they won't restrict players from pursuing a wider variety of choices in developing their playthroughs.
