Everything Video Games!

got Dying Light on Switch for Christmas.. never played it before and am starting to get acclimated to how it works and am able to craft some more worthwhile weapons. I can definitely see myself sinking a lot of hours into this game.
Great game. Getting spotted during the night is one of the most intense things I've experienced in gaming. Also a great way to get better at traversal!

Working my way through Art of Rally. Aiming to complete all the rallies, but not that fussed about winning them all. It's fun, but a once-through will do me fine.

Also need to make a call on The Ascent. Stuck at one of the bosses, and I think to beat it I'll have to backtrack and get another weapon. Need to decide if it's worth the hassle, or if I shelve it for now and play something else.

Was finally able to get a pre-order in for Horizon Forbidden West Collectors Edition after it has been out of stock on GameStop and most everywhere else days after the presale went live a couple months back.

I’m playing it right now and it feels like a few elements from a lot of games. Skyrim, Witcher 3, RDR2, Shadow of War, and lastly Assassins Creed. I’m only 20 hours in and I’m liking it. Might change when I get further into it but I already had to up the difficulty since I felt too OP with a few abilities. I remember getting bored of the story in Origins early and just gave up following later on, Odyssey was good throughout, and so far, Valhalla is enjoyable. I’m really liking some of the random “mystery” missions. They’re weird and funny.
Update: Finished AC Valhalla. It was disappointing at the end of the day. Took me 153 hours to beat it completely without any DLCs. Honestly, they probably could have cut that in half and it would have been fine. Not ever frigging AC game needs to be 100+ hours. I don't plan on playing any of the DLCs like I did with Origins and Odyssey. It just became very repetitive after about 70~ hours. It met a point of diminishing returns after that point.

There's no need to have as many regions that they did of just the same thing over and over. Go to find a guy, rescue an ally or burn a village or take over a fort to eventually go after the big fort and beat the regional boss. It needed variation in the story. It felt like a chore after a certain point.

The story was decent, but it didn't really feel like it was concluded with what was going on in the outside world. Felt kind of pointless to have a team looking for clues that never really paid off. Some missions were very buggy and unclear. I don't need to be hand-held through them, but some things are extremely unclear exactly what you're supposed to do. Like, there would be no way I'd know you'd need to do this very specific thing at some points during quests. I had to go to my phone and look up how to do something or how to find something at least 2 dozen times. Some of the small mystery missions, if you missed a little bit of dialogue, forget it. You don't have a mission in your menu to repeat what you're supposed to do.

Combat was lame compared to Origins and Odyssey. Some of the abilities were fun, but more than half were useless once you became too overpowered. The stat/leveling felt random and too similar to Skyrim. Eventually I became OP and had to keep increasing the difficulty to hardest by the end of the game. Also, the addition of the Mastery points felt useless at the end of the game.

There were too many things that felt very grindy within the game. The river raids, the mastery challenges, the general missions and areas to clear. And in the end none of those grindy things mattered. You just get a new settlement decoration, gear, or tattoo that you never even see on your character? what is even the point of the tattoos besides the face ones? so dumb. I know people complained about Odyssey and the weapons changing too often but I didn't think I changed my main bow the entire game in Valhalla.

Was it worth the $20 I paid for it? probably, but I would have been upset if I bought it for $60 on release.

Back in November I'd probably rank it higher than Origins but based on the last 3 it's now last. It had potential to be a fun game but felt like it was executed poorly.
  1. Odyssey
  2. Origins
  3. Valhalla
I still want to go back and play Black Flag since I heard that one is one of the best AC games, but Valhalla doesn't have me hopeful for what comes next in the series.

Been waffling on this and the special edition, but just sprung for Collectors since I will absolutely display it.

Same with me but with the Collectors Edition. I was debating it for a day or two because of the price tag when the presale started. Then it was gone everywhere. Was going to finally pre-order the special edition today and boom. Collector's edition it is.

So I grabbed it before I could think about the price tag again. LOL

I will play it for a good 200+ so it for sure won't be money wasted.

The hubby and I finally finished playing It Takes Two the other day. Lots of fun even if I kept over jumping my jumps! 😅 Thankful for the endless lives. We’re going to try playing it again but in opposite roles.
We started it today! I like all the roller coaster rails.
I also got this game as a Christmas gift, and my fiancé and I finished playing through it this week!

We really enjoyed how varied the levels were, and the mechanics changed things up enough that it never felt too "samey" anywhere. It is also batshit insane in a lot of places, which made it even more enjoyable and endearing.

I will say that we did find the writing and some of the storytelling in the game to be a bit weak and schlocky. We also felt there was a lot of opportunity to say something more poignant about relationships. That being said, our qualms did not drag the game down during our playthrough. I now want more game with Street Fighter-style squirrel fights on top of airplanes made out of boxer shorts.

Been slowly making my way through Kena Bridge of Spirits. It is so fucking gorgeous.

That was the first game I played on my PS5. It was absolutely fucking gorgeous. Great music too.

I truly hope they release more content for this franchise. I have heard it's an IP to watch.

I just started the second storyline with the huntress I think she's called. I keep getting distracted by the scenery and wanting to explore!

I absolutely hope they continue to expand the franchise. There are so many possibilities I can think of just from playing the first bit of the game.

100% agree. There were several things that felt borderline problematic from a story/framing aspect, but I understand that exaggeration/bluntness can be necessary for brevity. However, I would have been cool with a more nuanced approach to the sensitive topic matter. There also lacked a clear progression to the relationship at play—they seemed equally at each others throats up till the climax, little recognition/consolation.

Some of the humor was also more lowbrow than I prefer. Gameplay was ace though.

Tagging the wife here, so she can see answers and ask any follow up questions: @MsLoganHenney

I know we have some Nintendo Switch heads here, and she was just given a barely-used Nintendo Switch Lite (? - wife can confirm) for free from a co-worker. Looking for tips and basics...

1) What type of battery life can she expect playing from a full to empty charge?

2) I was researching getting a Switch a couple years ago and read a big limiting factor is internal memory (not sure what it is)....are the two ways to get/play games either downloading from the Nintendo store/cloud (a la Steam-like) or buying the physical games? If so, is one less expensive, pros/cons of the two formats, etc? I did read that the biggest con of cloud download is that limited memory but that could be mitigated by using an SD card. Accurate? If using the physical cartridge I imagine that memory is saved because the game itself is on the cartridge, but would some memory still be utilized for save files? Finally, if using the cloud and removing a game you're no longer playing from the internal memory, would save files/game progress be gone the next time you chose to retrieve it from the cloud?

3) Is there any price difference in getting phsyical vs cloud? As well, any tips on places to get deals on games?

4) Any MUST have accessories in your opinion? I believe the person gave it to her w/ a case and it looked like an SD card (? - wife can confirm if so and capacity).

5) Finally, I've always wanted to play BoTW. I know Witcher III is good, but I have that on Steam. The wife is interested in Animal Crossing. Any highly recommended titles from you lot?

Thanks and toodles!

2) You can expand the memory using a compatible microSD card, so the only reason to go with a cartridge is if you prefer physical I believe.

3) Depends. Sometimes there are sales on one and not the other. I like to follow Wario64 on Twitter to stay abreast of game deals but they are not limited to switch.

5) As far as Nintendo games in addition to what you listed I would say Super Mario Odyssey is a must have if 3D platforming sounds good to you. I think Rayman Legends is even better than the New Super Mario Bros if you like 2D platformers and sometimes is on sale for like $8. Lots of great indies, just depends on what you're into. Hades, Hollow Knight, Celeste, Slay the Spire are some of my favorites that come to mind. Haven't played them all on Switch though.
