Fresh Grabs

Some more tasty musical treats arrived.

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way (Columbia, 2013 MOFI Limited Pressing)
The Stan Getz Quintet - Interpretations By The Stan Getz Quintet (Norgran, 1954 First Pressing)
The Ronnie Scott Quartet - 1612 Overture (Gearbox Records, 2013 Limited 10" Pressing)
Chet Baker Ensemble - S/T (Pacific Jazz/Vogue, 1956 First UK 10" Pressing)

First up, massive thanks to @NewcastleSpinner for selling this MOFI copy of In A Silent Way. I'm going to put aside some time to properly listen later and I can't wait! The others are eBay wins where I was the only bidder, I seem to have had a good run lately. The Stan Getz was in a woeful state when it arrived, the seller had used some misleading photos and the amount of grime on the lp (which wasn't in an inner sleeve) was awful, but after a proper clean it looks new! The Ronnie Scott is an interesting one as the B-side consists of an interview between Ronnie and Les Tompkins, a local legend that lived down the road from me and wrote for Crescendo magazine.

Gerry Mulligan - Paris Concert (Vogue, 1956 First 7" Pressing)
Wardell Gray - S/T (Prestige/Esquire, 1953 First 7" Pressing)
Graeme Bell's Australian Jazz Band - Oh! Peter (Tempo Records, 1955 First 7" Pressing)
Bunk Johnson And His New Orleans Band - Tishomingo Blues (Brunswick, 1955 First 7" Pressing)

A 7" bundle that I was the only bidder on, got these for £4! Also shown here is an oddity, a scrap of paper signed by the pianist Michael Garrick!

The Savoy Label A Discography by Michel Ruppli & Bob Porter
The Blue Note Label A Discography by Michel Ruppli & Michael Cuscuna
Benny Goodman by Bruce Crowther
Rhythm-a-ning: Jazz Tradition and Innovation in the 80's by Gary Giddins

More books. The Blue Note and Savoy discographies are behemoths that contain detailed notes of every recorded session (including unused tracks), photographic essays, and detailed histories of the labels. I also have the Prestige on its way to me. The Benny Goodman book is the final one in the Jazz Masters series, a fantastic set of books that were often used as the basis for much larger biographies by the authors. I now have all 15 in the series (3 left to read) and while I didnt think I would be overly interested in this one I started in last night and have almost finished, its fascinating! Finally, a jazz oddity that was going cheap so I couldn't say no!

Jazz Concert Souvineer Programme Bundle

A while ago I bought some cheap concert programmes and really enjoyed looking through them. Recently, these appeared for sale incredibly cheap and I couldn't say no to them!

The Cure - Greatest Hits
Harish Raghavan - Calls For Action
Al Green - Let's Stay Together / Gets Next To You

I'm having a minor 80s revival in my tastes currently so along with this excellent Cure compilation (which I nought on CD when it came out) I'm searching for New Order's Substance. Harish Raghavan is from a recommendation of @kafunis and features Joel Ross, Immanuel Wilkins etc and sounded great on streaming. The Al Green's were a test purchase from a new (to me) Danish website but I don't think I'll buy any more as when I was entering them here I realised they sent the wrong one (I'd ordered I'm Still In Love With You as I bought Gets Next To You in the UK on Speakers Corner).

4 Mars
Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - Vol 10
Les Volcans - Miwalo
Tannoy Life Buds

A fab new Djibouti compilation from Ostinato, one of my Poly-Rythmo grails from Superfly, the one single I lacked from another great Beninese band, and my latest gadget courtesy in part from some money from my Dad for my birthday. These sound pretty decent for a sixth of the price of Samsung's or Apple's and it feels nerdishly good that they match my speaker brand.

McCoy Tyner - Enlightenment / Asante / Horizon
Miles Davis - Four & More / My Funny Valentine

Finding a new reliable record seller is both amazing and a little dangerous. This is my second order in the past few weeks from Record City in Japan who combine great (and not too pricy) records with the gold standard for Norway of low customs declarations. Looking forward to tucking into more McCoy, and Miles Davis #59 and #60. 🔥

Good to know I’ve ordered 4 records from them that currently appear to be somewhere in China!

How do? He’s been trying to make things with the smallest footprint possible for years. I’m fairly certain all of the cds were recycled “ecopacks”
I would guess that when comparing your impact you’re left with 5 choices and these would be them in order of most helpful for the environment to least.

1. Don’t release vinyl
2. Release vinyl with recycled wax and packaging
3. Release vinyl with just recycled wax
4. Release vinyl with just recycled packaging
5. Go the Sylvan Esso route and release virgin vinyl with tons of excess and annoying plastic packaging.

It’s just not a hobby that us vinyl addicts have much high ground on, and that’s unfortunate, but a reality. It’s something though and I suppose something is better than nothing but would have loved to have seen this with recycled wax if they were going to lean hard on their 1% for the planet thing. He undoubtedly pulls his weight for conservation efforts, it just comes across as self-righteous to me when I see these glaring contradictions.
