Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - Nin A Non Gnin / Ehouzou Dandan

End of a pretty crappy week (8 Covid tests in the family, thankfully all negative) so great to end it on an upbeat note with these two beauties. The white one is one of the rarest of all Poly-Rythmo's while the yellow was cheap so I got it for the sleeve (which I didn't have). Top stuff.

Nice. This is the first one I’ve gotten where I have the standard release as well. Both sound great, but the white label is definitely better.

I like them because usually they are first, if not early, stampers. The covers may not be in great shape, but the vinyl is usually beter than a regular retail release you find in the bins.
 
Her Soundtrack - Mondo Exclusive.

Has a bit more surface noise than I'd like for this soundtrack, unfortunately. Also a bit of an edge warp. Is it just me?, but I cannot seem to get a flat record these days.

Interesting variant that goes from orange/gold to pink in the light.

If only there was an App where you could check records, maybe even scan the barcode, to see which version you had. Also, if you're gonna describe records as clean, don't be sending me records that have more hair than i do lol

I've noticed that Superfly tend to mess up when it comes to this kind of thing. I bought a few records in the past that they list as VG+ with no issues but they came warped to hell, easily the worst I have seen. Luckily they accepted a return because there was no way I could play them. Its happened twice with me so far :rolleyes:

I think this is the third time i've bought from them and the previous ones had been cleaned and put in new inner sleeves. These two, which i suspect was from the same owner, are covered in dust and dog/cat hair and one of them have some fingerprints or smudges or some fluid spilt one them. Which makes me think that the sample tracks on the product pages were not from these records. They look like they had just come in, given a quick look and listed for sale.

This makes me sad. I've only ever bought African records from Superfly (but like 100 times) and I've never had a problem with them. Of all my regular sellers, they have been the only ones where the records have always been clean. And reasonably priced and graded. I've always thought their other stuff sometimes looked a bit more random in terms of pricing. Sorry to hear about this and @Selaws warps.

It was a bit surprising getting records from them being that dirty. The Roots is a little tricky as the Intro/Outtro are listed on both the sleeve and labels and when you scan it in Discogs, both the mispress and "fixed" versions pop up. So you'd expect that they would do their due diligence and test to make sure which version they have before listing it.
I'm gonna give them a thorough clean and contact Superfly about the records and maybe ask for a partial refund on The Roots, if i decide to keep it.

I picked up the (standard?) white vinyl today, was warned it would maybe have issues but I'm most of the way through side A and it sounds fine so far. Did give it a clean first.

Edit: Of course I turned over to side two and got two bursts of what sounded like non-fill within the first minute, plus a couple later on.

Chicago-based bassist Josh Abrams puts out a singular style of improvisational, avant garde jazz spotlighting the guimbri, a three-stringed North African bass lute. Its primordial, rhythmic drone lulls like a deep rainstorm, gently bringing shifts in instrumentation and percussion to the forefront in jams that go on as long as 25 minutes. These are special records, recently reissued by Aguirre Records in Belgium, and beautifully pressed at Pallas.

Bremer/McCoy - Utopia
John Scofield - Swallow Tales

Two more stunning jazz records.

I can’t believe it took me two years to discover 2019’s Utopia, a beautiful, deeply contemplative, analog-recorded album from Danish duo Jonathan Bremer and Morten McCoy. It’s classical-adjacent jazz so ambient fans should really enjoy it as well.

Legendary jazz guitarist John Scofield has had an incredible career, but it’s amazing to see him still putting out essential work after 40+ years of recording. It’s also interesting to hear him on the ECM label playing the songs of legendary bassist Steve Swallow. Fantastic record.

Ambiance - Into A New Journey
The Heshoo Beshoo Group - Armitage Road

Both albums were under-the-radar grabs from Target’s 2-for-1 sale. So happy to have both, and not often you can pick up titles like these for a bargain. BBE’s Into A New Journey hasn’t been available since its initial release in 1982, and it’s just a fun, groovy, jazz-fusion jammer packed with Latin and African vibes.

The music is fantastic, but Armitage Road is almost worth having it for its subversive take on the cover of The Beatles - Abbey Road, showing the horrific inequalities present in 1970-era South Africa during Apartheid. But this is another groovy jammer of a jazz record born from challenging circumstances in the South Cape that’s been unavailable for almost 50 years.

Heldon ‎– Heldon IV: Agneta Nilsson
Roedelius ‎– Wasser Im Wind

Heldon IV isn’t considered to be one of Heldon’s better records but it might be my favorite. There’s just something about its fat, spacey, droning synthesizers that speak to me, and I love the guitar work.

Wasser Im Wind is definitely my favorite Roedelius album. It sounds a lot like Roedelius’s old band Cluster to be sure — it makes a nice companion piece to Zuckerzeit — but the variety of ideas and exploration here are some of his best.

It's a strange one of for sure because I often see people post here with purchases from Superfly with no issues at all.

Another record I bought from them was Yusef Lateef's Jazz Mood. It wasn't a cheap buy at all and I had been looking for a copy for ages. It was listed as Vg+ and the photos showed it to be pristine. When it arrived the corner was bent enough that it left a crease. The box was fine so it must have happened before shipping and certainly wasn't on the photo. I sent photos and they offered a partial refund with no other explanation or apology so made me think they knew about it. A real shame and hopefully it was just an off day for them.
